Ohio Primary and Obama

Feb 14, 2008 21:34

So here's the deal...

Ohio is a very important election for democrats. It is one of the two states that Hillary is staking her election on, and Barack Obama is currently behind her in the polls anywhere from 10-30% depending on who you read.

Their campaign is running a callout for people in neighboring states to go to Ohio to help campaign on behalf of Barack Obama.

I am going.

And I think Greg Westneat is in as well.

The plan is to go the weekend of March 1st, the campaign is working to house out-of state volunteers. We'd drive over Friday night, canvas Saturday, and drive home Sunday.

I'm putting this out there in case anyone else is interested in going as well.

If you want to go please let me know by this coming Tuesday, Tuesday night Greg and I will be sending in the Online form. If other people want in, that is when we'd set things up as a group. Everyone is invited to join us.

I encourage people to go with us, especially if you are an Obama supporter. This is still a very close election, and it's only going to be won by people getting out the vote in key states.

I've never campaigned like this for a candidate before, so I have no idea what's involved, but I feel that the choice between Barack and Hillary is very clear in my mind. Everyone has gotten tired and worn down by a really shitty presidential administration. Not only has the Bush team been clearly incompetent for the past seven years, they have divided the country along party lines in a way that has not been seen in our lifetimes. There is deep damage to how we as a nation and generation look at politics. I promise you that putting Hillary Clinton into office will do nothing to reverse this damage.

In fact, I argue that under Hillary Clinton it will get worse. Hillary is a Clinton..a name alone that does nothing to make Republicans feel any better (think how you'd feel if Jeb Bush was running for the white house emulating his bro). Hillary has shown that she campaigns to kill her opponent, not meet them half way, a policy regularly used by this administration. And MOST importantly Hillary has yet to vote for a measure that removes power from the Presidency.

I do not worry that she would be a shrewd and capable leader, because she would. I instead fear deeply for our national identity, and cultural psyche. A second negative administration on the heels of this one could permanently destroy how we feel about and evaluate our political process.

That is something that I cannot allow to be lost on my watch. On our watch. Our children will judge us by this election 20 and 30 years from now, and I cannot let that idly go by.

Lives are busy, and we all have to work. We all don't feel the way I do. Cool. I respect and don't really care. But if you are an Obama supporter, and you've got nothing else to do March 1st, I don't think you've got any reason to avoid joining us.

Anyhoo. Let me know if you're in by Tuesday and I'll make sure to keep you up to date and co-ordinated with the bigger plan.
