expository ramblings part the eighth

When I'm writing any one particular fic, what I usually find is I will have particular themes running through my head as I write. Sometimes I work them out beforehand while I'm plotting the story, or it's comes to me as a desire to incorporate something into a section which then finds its way into other sections and chapters.

*wipe cut to the the talk about the fics*

'The Times That Weren't' had the theme of revelation. Discovery and acceptance, of their feelings, of their faults, of their wasted chances. There are echoes of these going through the rest of my fics and ripple effects. When you write Sam and Cameron with a long history you then have to point out that they've been passing each other by for a long time. Quite often that might be a detriment to a pairing, which might be a reason some fic writers prefer to ground their relationship in far more recent events, the crash in Antarctica or Cam joining the X-302 program. I wanted more than that. Something grander. I'm such a sappy bastard sometimes.

'The Ninth Chevron' had some minor themes throughout, macaroons for instance, parting and reuniting when Sam went to Atlantis, and first meetings. Not only Sam and Cam's first meetings acting as bookends for the story, but also both of Sam's first meetings with Cam's Grandma. I also try to emphasise that because they've known each other so long, they're already very in tune with each other.

'Under the Silent Stars' has a strong current of Sam and Cam being touchstones for each other. Sam can calm Cameron down with just a touch, while he can reassure her and bolster her with his understanding. Another theme is the song 'Kryptonite' by 3 Doors Down. I managed to thread that through several of the sections, building up to their joy ride in the X-302 in chapter 8. Another main theme was how Cam and Sam are linked to the stars, they are defined by their desire to see the stars and to stand together beneath them.

'Voices from a Lost Time' was built up from my desire to write about Cam and Sam in the rain, and water became a theme which featured throughout. The other main theme was saving each others lives, with the repeated motif of the words 'I have you'. And of course, the theme of the title, how they gain knowledge from the past, whispered across time and through paradoxes.

'A Sword in Agate' spent a lot of time at the Academy, examining the start of their partnership, even as they are cementing it in the present. Jacob's relationship with Cam sees a little light too. The other main theme was Muranis, through the eyes of Ilemus (recovery), Cam (light and crystal) and Sam (science and secrets). Another little theme you'll see is that everybody loves Vala. It goes on to more prominence in the next story too.

'The Patience of Kings', as you might expect, spends a lot of time examining the false starts and waiting which Sam and Cam have had over the years of their friendship. Both good and bad. Also I added a theme of apology in the end. It's mostly one-sided from Sam, but that's just the way the stories went in this fic. I also delve into making the Battle of Antarctica something which actually deserved a Medal of Honour for Cam. Also... Sam is an epic bad-ass.

This is not exhaustive. In fact, some readers may find themes even I didn't notice while writing. I'm not the sort of author who thinks my way of seeing a work is the only correct way. If I were I could never be a Sam/Cam shipper.

the ninth chevron, a sword in agate, the patience of kings, under the silent stars, the times that weren't, sam/cam, writing, stargate sg-1, voices from a lost time
