I just looked at my last entry; the date was August 1, 2014. It's been almost a year and a half since my last post.
1. My grandma passed away in October of 2014. She had been having circulatory problems as well as problems with her mitral valve leaking. Early spring of 2014, Dr. said surgery was an option, but it was possible she would not recover from the surgery. So she said no. In Sept., she got a nasty respiratory infection, and was recovering from that, then in late October, when she was still dealing with the effects of the infection, she woke up having trouble breathing and went to the hospital. She died before noon that day. I had seen it coming for a while. She wasn't able to get around like she liked to, and she had always said, that before she became a burden on anyone, she would rather just die. I think she was ready to go, and just went. The funeral was quick, simple, just a graveside service on a beautiful October afternoon.
2. In January 2015, I fell while overseeing a girls' soccer game at work. During my graduate program, my principal allowed me to take on some administrative duties - supervising at football, basketball, and softball games, and at the teams' soccer matches. At one of these games, I was kicking the practice balls back to the girls on the team, and rolled my ankle on one of the balls, and fell. Hard. On an asphalt pad behind the goalie. I busted open my chin, blackened my eye, got a nasty concussion, tore my gastrocnemius, and damaged the fibial nerve in my right leg. Nothing has been the same since. Ugh.
3. In July, my best friend's mother died of terminal cancer. They found lumps in her liver and intestines in April, and by July, she was gone. My best friend has been a wreck since then, lost her home, her job, and almost her sanity. She's better now, though.
4. I got a new car. I leased a 2015 Jeep Cherokee (not the Grand Cherokee, but the littler one). It's my first SUV and I don't think I'll ever go back to a car.
5. Graduated with my Master's in Ed. Leadership. 3.65 GPA. Go me.
6. In September 2015, my bestie and her son moved in with me. As I mentioned she had lost her house and her job early in the summer, and her cousin had said she could live in one of her uncle's spare properties. It was in probate, however, so the length of time would be relatively short - 6 months. Well, the place was a shithole, dump, crumbling wreck. The little apartment add-on that she was living in flooded when it rained, and made the whole place untenable. Then, three weeks into a 6 month 'lease,' the cousin basically said for them to 'get out' because she was selling the place. Commence homelessness. So, the bestie and her 19 yr old son moved in with me. So, now I have housemates.
7. In November, the current department chair person left to be a dean at another school, and the principal chose me to take her place. So now I am responsible for leading the District PLCs, keeping track of the Eng. Dept. Budget, running department/collaborative meetings, and negotiating disputes within the department. I am also the liaison to the district for matters of curriculum and instruction, as well as testing. Whoot. I'm still in the classroom, but with a little bit of POWER. (paraphrasing The Lion King there.)
So all in all, a good year for me, bad year for people I love.
2016 looks to be a good year, too. Lots of good movies coming out: Captain America: Civil War, Superman v. Batman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool, The Jungle Book, Tarzan. Lots to look forward to jobwise as well, as I might be doing a Teacher Leadership Seminar from March 2016 to August of 2017 through UF Center for Teacher Quality. Not sure how long the bestie and her son will live with me, but they will be paying a small rent that will help financially.
As for this space? I usually used it for fannish things, but I am not fannish about anything anymore. I'd like to start doing small original pieces, writing for myself, but I don't know if I shall have the time to post. I'd like to, though. I liked having the outlet to express myself here. I won't make posting a resolution, but I will try to be back here more often. I am not up on the tumblr set, nor the instagram or snapchat or twitter. Those forms of 'blogging' are just too brief for me. I liked LJ for the ability to really sit down and compose stuff.
Anyway, regale me with your plans for the new year, or just catch up with what you've been doing. I've missed this space!
