Workshoppy!

Yesterday I welded for the first time in my life. The first thing that struck me was the utter coolness of donning the Garb - head to tow in thick cloth, steel toes, heavy gloves, and the visor, of course. I felt less like a dressed human than a human mind animating some impenetrable shell.

There's magic in this craft, no doubt. To see your work born out of the blackness of the visor, as beads of molten steel split and skitter across the table, is surreal. There's fear and thrill in handling that many amps, that much heat, and just the Promethean conceit that man should shape metal. In other words, it's fun.

Picked up a bike for my sister at the city auction; she's finally taken an interest, not because of anything I've said, of course, but because her roommate has begun riding to work. For exactly $5, the chrome and paint are still impeccable, the wheels are in fine shape, it has a chain guard and 3-speed rear hub. Everything for the novice non-mechanically-inclined cyclist. Tomorrow we're taking it down to V-low, the local low-rider club, for a bit of pimping out.

This evening was building shelves, and another firing of the Mile-End bread oven. Talk of placating city officials; I'm sure the Plateau mayoress would be sympathetic to this sort of project. Caught up with Gerry, then downed a stout with Mary at Dieu du Ciel. And got home early!
