I was reading a period mystery. I frequently hear about washing things with "carbolic" and this time googled it. It is a disinfectant.
Of course, I googled further to find that drinking it was a popular(?) choice for commiting suicide. It is a highly painful and slow death. We're talking hours. 10-12 hours in the hospital writhing in agony. WTF??? Why would anyone do that? Why were women doing that? I can see why men would pick guns or hanging. Lysol was also used. Talk about despair.
