I can't stop watching the Olympics!

I've been fairly skeptical about London hosting for the whole 7 years of build up - it's meant for other people, it's ridiculously expensive,  it would mess up the summer, wtf is that weird red tower thing all about, why does that football club want to destroy the Olympic stadium before it's even been used, that ( Read more... )

As a resident of another Olympic host city--Atlanta--I understand ALL OF THOSE PRE-OLYMPICS QUESTIONS. I was really young when we hosted, but I can recall retroactively that it was expensive, there were crowds, the cauldron was weird, the mascot was weirder (I mean, not even its designer knew what it was, hence the name Izzy the Whatsit), etc. But in the end, I feel that the investments made in the city for the Olympics generally paid off, and East London especially may see a big benefit over time from all those investments!

That opening ceremony was one heck of a show. MUCH better than Beijing, in my opinion. So much history and culture for Danny Boyle to draw off of and while there were some things I would've changed, it was still really cool and I'll remember it for its uniqueness a lot more than Beijing's.

I've been enjoying watching what I call sports goody bags--just put your hand in by turning on one of the three or four channels showing stuff and see what's inside! Fencing, dressage, water polo, field hockey, volleyball of beach and indoor variety, basketball, gymnastics, great fun!! I still prefer the winter games, but these summer games are awesome.
