Pairings Meme

Here is a pairings meme ganked from Elizabeth!

NB: One of the pairings mentioned is from ASOIAF and involves a character introduced in ADWD, whose mere existence might be considered a spoiler. No actual plot spoilers beyond this person being alive, but um, it's a plot twist, so. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

OH THANK GOD *snuggles Bran* You scared me! But I should have known you wouldn't let me down like that, not my darling.

I have a theory that certain people think Harry = main boy and Hermione = main girl and assume they have to get together without actual taking into account their characters and actual relationship. Also, that a lot of girls identify with Hermione, I suspect more than would if other girls in the series had been developed more earlier on, and they want to get with Harry more with Ron... basically, people imposing a reading that simply ISN'T THERE. Urgh. But if you are actually reading the books, Hermione/Ron in Goblet of Fire couldn't really get any clearer could it. Hermione dating someone else: Harry is bemused but chilled, Ron is massively jealous. Spelt. Out.

The mere concept of Harry/Hermione is still a bit weird to me because I thought it was really obvious, and when I was a baby shipper my corner of fandom was pretty much Harry/Ginny vs Harry/Cho (I was vaguely Harry/Ginny, but that was mostly because it was obvious rather than with any particular enthusiasm. Enthusiasm was for Harry/Draco) and the mere idea of Harry/Hermione was ridiculous. And then I ventured a bit further into fandom and discovered all these completely mental Harry/Hermione shippers O.O Weirdos. I also saw some Harry/Draco vs Harry/Snape shipping wars, but I was too much of an equal opportunist to join in haha. Whether I prefer Harry/Draco or Harry/Snape has been a tricky question which has dogged me before lol.

I think the only canon relationship that ever surprised me was Tonks/Lupin. Did not see that coming. But otherwise, it was all pretty straightforward.

RPF shipping is a bit different from normal shipping. It's totes creepier for one thing, and it's strange trying to find a way to say you'd prefer something else but you don't actually want anyone real to be upset or breakup or anything. Tinhatting can be a sign of crazy, but then there are some people that really do get together after you've been thinking about it - like Andrew and Emma, obvs. Who I had more fangirl enthusiasm for as a concept before they actually got together - because it was a concept. Now it's real, I can't actively ship it. IDK. Where the lines are is hard to explain.

I await your meme!

OF COURSE I WOULDN'T. <3

Yeah, I guess it's probably that. Also, Ron has a huge family and there's always someone around, and Hermione and Harry are both kind of stranded on their own in the Wizarding world so I guess from this point of view it would make a liiiiittle bit of sense but NAAAAAAAAH. Really. I thought Hermione/Ron was so blatantly obvious from the start, and if you didn't get it in GoF then you are probably a special kind of super blind.

Ugh I'm not really big on Harry/Ginny either (though I do like both Harry/Draco and Draco/Ginny with past Harry/Ginny in equal measure) because I wanted her to travel the world and become the most awesome bitch on the Quidditch pitch and I wasn't very impressed that JKR just made her settle down and have children that aren't even ginger so yeah.

I think Tonks/Lupin surprised me too, though I have this weird half-remembrance of seeing it coming, which I think must be imaginary but IDK. xD

I know, RPF shipping is pretty complicated with all its implications! Lal's steampunk!AU was okay for me because a) I didn't ~really know the people involved all that well, and b) they were pretty much fictional versions of themselves not actual Adam/Kris/whoever if you know what I mean? I honestly cannot read anything that pretends like it's the actual thing, someone's actual life, as it is happening. Weirds me out.
