Spiderwick Chronicles - This should count as 5 books, right? Except that each one is about 5X8, about 100 pages, and full of illustrations. Read these to David on the recommendation of a friend who has a son about the same age. David was scared at first (full of a family encountering fairies, both good and bad), but eventually got really into it.
The Invention of Hugo Cabaret - also recommended to read to a child under 10 by an internet list, but David didn't want to go past the 1st chapter. I have never seen the movie all the way through that is based on the book, so I wanted to know what happened! It was really good - another one that looked thick but had lots of illustrations, I could tell where the story was headed but I liked seeing how the author got there.
The Neverending Story - along the lines of Princess Bride, I wanted to read the book it was based on, even though I only saw the movie once a couple decades ago. I only remember the movie vaguely, enough to know something bad was going to happen to the horse near the beginning of the book.
There was a lot more to the second half of this book than is portrayed in the movie. This, at some points, made it hard to like the main character, but I loved the world that was built and all the detail, I could picture it very clearly in my head (and again, not just from the 80's movie). Highly enjoyed.
Worth noting, all of the ones this month were actual hard copy books, not on the Kindle. And in each case I think it made a big difference, the first two with all of the illustrations, and the last with the changing colors of ink and the beautiful chapter markers.
Wow, really thought I read more this month...but we'll blame the stress of LGPE and my crafting for getting in the way (baby bows are coming along nicely, sewing not so quickly/easily)
Up next for April - finishing the Kite Runner (which is hard because I don't like the main character) and Prodigy, the sequel to Legend.
