Here are 4 places I have eaten at recently; 2 different cuisines, all with good company!
Cafe Istanbul (Scott Blvd & DeKalb Industrial): Authentic Mediterranean restaurant. Most seating is on cushions on the floor (not so good with a 1 year old!), décor older but interesting. Hummus and pita were okay, but both tasted like they had pizza seasoning on them. Entree was the kabob combo platter, beef and chicken.
Chicken was good, beef too spicy for my tastes. Served over rice with a few vegetables, was expecting the onions to be cooked. Baklava for dessert, I thought it was okay, the baklava connoisseur in the family (Corey) did not. Not kid friendly, pricey lunch menu. I hear on the weekends it is busy, with belly dancing and hooka. 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Rice (Five Forks and Killian Hill) Chinese and Sushi Bar. Clean and quiet. Good variety on menu; I had California rolls and salmon/cream cheese rolls, they were somewhat bland. Corey had the beef fried rice, he let David have the leftovers Direct quote “fairly standard, nothing special”. Kid friendly, helpful staff. 2 out of 5 stars.
Thaicoon (Briarcliff and Clifton): Thai and Sushi Bar. Also clean and quiet, somewhat upscale décor. Extensive sushi menu, I got a J.B. roll/California roll platter, and could not finish it all! Corey had the pineapple fried rice, enjoyed it but said it could have used a little more spice. Fried ice cream for dessert was quite tasty, menu was a little pricey. 4 out of 5 stars.
Nicolas (LaVista and Briarcliff): Lebanese/Mediterranean food. Older building/not much décor, kind of cold (kept my jacket on both times). Fantastic hummus and pita. First time tried the chicken shawarma, super tender and flavorful. Little bro got a sampler platter, and I liked everything I sampled off of that, especially the eggplant!
Second time took my mom, got one of the sampler platters myself, was pleased again! Nickolas, the owner, will come out to greet you, and there is belly dancing on the weekends, although the music is kinda loud! 5 out of 5 stars!
I do think it’s funny that the places I liked better are a) further away, and b) I used to live within 2 miles of both of them and never tried them! Oh well, live and learn more! Here are 4 places I have eaten at recently; 2 different cuisines, all with good company!
