Things that have Cheered Me Up this week:
- The session at the Beaconsfield last night. It was quite good - certainly in terms of atmosphere, if a little average musically. Had to change a string though, which naturally kept being as flat as a pancake subsequently. Have got someone's version of The Holly Bush going round my head at the moment, but can't think whose and will not exorcise it until I find the track and listen to it. Think it might be Capercaillie (it's certainly someone with a more modern sound) but haven't found it yet. It's a very nice tune, but remains an unscratched itch until I find the exact recording I'm thinking of. Sadly searching my MP3 tag info hasn't worked, so it doesn't appear in the track name.
- I came across Amanda Kapousouz's site, on which the MP3 samples are very nice. It's a sort of cross between Nenah Cherry and someone else a bit more folky, but I'm not quite sure who. Go listen.
- "Someone keeps stealing my letters!"
- Sid Meier's new-ish Pirates! computer game is fab. I can tell it's going to eat a fair bit of time in the near future - Arr!, Avast! and so on. Great fun with sword fights, wooing governors' daughters, naval battles, buried treasure and much buckling of swashes to satisfy one's inner child. It's not another Civilization, but most highly recommended if you've some spare time and a Windows box.
Oh, and if anyone wants to rent a three-bedroom house in Chesterton as of mid-June or thereabouts, ours is going on the market.
