A colleague was making up a display for Valentine's Day yesterday, and became all excited when she discovered that there was a subject heading "TESTOSTERONE FICTION". This made me blink hard. She was sure it was a genre heading, like "ADVENTURE FICTION" or "SCIENCE FICTION". Alas for her plans, but much to my relief, she was wrong. The heading is "TESTOSTERONE - FICTION" and the dash in there changes the meaning very significantly. This is not a whole category of books that would feature the likes of Chuck Norris or Jean Claude Van Damme in the movie versions, but rather books containing fiction ABOUT testosterone. In fact, the Library of Congress has apparently used this heading exactly once, for one mystery book in which the hormone plays a major plot role.
More rebellion news too: Late yesterday I had a cryptic remark in my e-mail from another library's director, saying that the "doo doo has hit the fan" at the Big Messed-Up Consortium HQ. Well, it turns out that indeed that remark was triggered by the official letters of withdrawal, as I surmised. But the letters were received not only from my own library and the Big Suburban Library, but also from a neighboring college library that we hadn't expected to be able to join. This morning another smaller suburban library reports that it too will join us, bringing the official count to five. A sixth library, who adjoins our area on the other side, seems very likely at this point as well, but still needs board approval. That brings the census to half of our original group, with additional gains still quite possible, even probable.
Tomorrow the Delegates' Assembly meets, and I expect the fireworks there should be quite entertaining. They can't stop us from withdrawing. All they can do is try to rip us off for as much money and equipment as possible. The resolve of the leading directors and local boards is now solid enough that I don't see any risk that the revolt will be blocked by that tactic.
