Sundog and the White Bluralarin612August 11 2007, 14:49:56 UTC
Sundog's wife, Selene, was killed in the Tyrant Takeover Incident, right after she closed the wound where Lightning Shard's arm had been ripped off. Seeing that she was the one keeping his enemies alive and well, the Tyrant decided to end her.
However, the White Blur, the fastest ... thing, anywhere, as far as we can tell, was also on the scene. Blur has no allegiance to First Line, but the fight was in his home town of Denver, and the Tyrant's target was, in fact, Blur's partner, White Rabbit. White Rabbit is a powerful magician, capable of returning the Tyrant's mind to its secondary state and thus allowing Novaman to retake control.
The Tyrant manipulated the battlefield to his liking and then gave the speedster a choice; save the only one who could end the fight or save the only one who could make sure everyone lived through it. The plan was, in fact, to hit the Tyrant with a Garicite beam strong enough to almost kill him, let White Rabbit restore Novaman's mind, and then let Selene bring him back from the edge of death.
The White Blur had a difficult choice indeed, especially considering that one of the choices was also his best friend.
Blur chose to save his friend, first. Selene ... died. The Tyrant was brutal.
The team managed to save Novaman, anyway, but that is another story. White Blur, for his part, is torn. Blur, you see, has no idea what the true limits of his speed are. Most of we scientific-minded superheroes believe he has no limit. He is acutely aware of what his speed does to the environment around him. I have seen the man ignite the atmosphere at the end of a punch, leave city roads in pieces in his wake, and shatter steel with the strength of a sonic boom he creates. He is not sure if he could have saved both, he told me, once. He was afraid to try, though, because doing so would mean going faster than he ever had, before. And so he chose his friend. The reason he gives is that Rabbit had the power to end the battle before others died. But Rabbit is also the White Blur's best friend, and it is impossible to make such a choice dispassionately.
Sundog seems to understand that Novaman had nothing to do with it, and does not blame him. However, he is extremely bitter at White Blur for choosing as he did, especially since he knows that Blur MIGHT have been fast enough to save both. Even if Blur only could have saved one, Sundog thinks it should have been his wife. "Logically," he told me, "Selene would have been the better choice. She might have brought Rabbit back. Besides, there are other psychics ... she was one of a kind." As with Blur, Sundog's love for his wife is obviously a part of this logic.
I feel for both of them. Both had people dear to them on the line, both know their hearts are guiding them, but in the end Blur the power to make the choice. They have their reasoning, of course, but it's thick with personal investment. I do not think Sundog will ever be able to forgive Blur's choice, and I do not think Blur will ever be fully convinced that he made the right one.
