Chap 480 - Last Words (Spoilers)

Chapter 480 is up. Do we have the secret to killing Naraku?

Um. I can't say I found this week's chapter terribly inspiring. Maybe it's just he lack of squish. Shouldn't it always be about squish? Okay, nah, just kidding. However, I do feel like we're closing in on the end of an era and I feel the need to chronicle it. Kinda like filming a train wreck, that same, 'can't look away feeling'. Oh, and it's better than working. Peek underneath for this week's musings.

Hm. Tetsusaiga is back! And it's spikey! Everyone watch out! Doesnt' look like it or he got an upgrade out of the deal though. At least not that we know of yet. Which is kinda too bad. Now I know we're all just a tad sick of the sword upgrades, and in that sense i'm not sorry equilibrium has been reached... however, all this business with the mirror held such great potential. Like, shouldn't Inu be rewarded for overcoming his narcisism? Oh, right. It was Kagome that saved his furry little butt again overcame it for him. So I guess we're right. He really didn't deserve an upgrade. *sigh* all that mirror monster for nothing....

I thought this was interesting. Kagome tells Kanna she's free and Kanna doesn't seem to grok it. I can't say i blame her. How niave can Kagome be? How could Kanna be free of Naraku? Ever? Broken or not? And remembering Kagura as she did a few chapters back, she's not so gullible as to think she's really free. Kagome is really living in a fifteen year old fantasy here. But still, Kanna's frame here is heart breaking (hahaha - pun - get it?)

So Kagome get's a glass shard in the eye and isn't writhing around in pain demanding to be whisked back tot he modern era where she can go to the emergency room (maybe to be cared for by one of her fans on my flist!). Oh, right. This IS a fairy tale. Anyway. We apparently get the secret to killing Naraku. And I must say - did we not know this before? Did Kagome not know this before (see comment at the end). And - i just have to say this for all us little squish girls - come on, dog-boy! this was your big chance to cuddle her and worry over her. She's got a fucking piece of glass in her eye! Show a little more concern! Sheesh. Men.

This panel really struck me too. Sorry for fangirling (but that's what this is about after all), but this panel strikes me as showing one of the aspects of Inu's character that I find most compelling. I suspect many of us do. So gruff on the outside and yet clearly feeling a complex set of emotions - remorse, sadness, cynicism, who knows? - on the inside. He did offer to let her go, he did try to do the 'right thing' (well, we could question that as she might find some glue and come back to stab him again... but this is all symbolic at this point). He did try to be 'big' about it and not take advantage of a monster in a little girl's guise when she was down... but she blew all his kindness away - at him and his prescious I might point out.  And the symbolism of his looking in the mirror that is now powerless to hurt him and feeling those things is interesting on a subconscious level as well.

Now this kinda pissed me off. Kagome's getting all squishy on Kanna - giving her credit for having a heart when Naraku doesn't - blah blah blah. And she didn't have a similar conviction when Kikyou died and told her it was up to her? Kikyou gave her just as much encouragement, strength etc. - held her hand instead of poking her eye out, for example - and yet Kagome walked away from her death looking rattled. Now i know there was other stuff going on there - like Inu being all emo, which undoubtedly rattled her as well, but for some reason this just pissed me off.  Am I outta line here? Someone give me some perspective.

Time to go take a shower and get on with my day. I think tonight I may have to write some squish just to make up for this chapter. Sigh. So much squish to write, so little time.
