It had been almost two weeks since Fiona's last misdemeanor and she could not stop thinking about it. And it was not Xavi's arms around her and their rushed but oh so fulfilling sex that she so fondly recalled, but rather their discussion and intimacy at the party. She went to bed every night and woke up every morning next to Jelena, but her mind was far away from her lover.
Initially she thought it was all because Xavi was the first man she had actually had a real conversation with since the Carlos incident, and because, unlike the Pique episode, she had spent the night over, sharing bed and blanket like a real couple.
She felt guilty for it, because Jelena was offering her the same thing and it wasn't correct to the other woman to still think about the mistake she had made the way she did. Because unlike the Pique affair, Fiona's soul refused to feel guilty this time.
She knew it was wrong, that she had cheated again and that Jelena would be devastated to know, but in her heart of hearts, she had felt a connection that made her feel she had done the right thing.
After the first few days, she blamed the memory lingering on its novelty and on the sexual satisfaction she had felt. But as the week concluded and she was in a club again, locked in an embrace with her lover, who was gently squeezing her ass, still feeling Xavi's presence alerted Fiona something was wrong.
In her mind, she was doing something she had not allowed herself to do before, she was replacing Jelena for Xavi and she imagined it was him kissing her and touching her that way, and not her lover.
She had not done this after Pique. And instead of understanding how wrong that was, from the point of view of keeping her relationship with Jelena, Fiona just allowed her imagination to roam free, and bring the man she had had only a brief encounter with between her and Jelena.
Later that night, when they were drifting to sleep, both of them satisfied with their lovemaking, Fiona's mind still reached for Xavi. It seemed that he was wedged in her head somewhere and getting him out would be impossible.
She turned around to face Jelena, who was already fast asleep, Fiona felt the bitter claw of guilt. She had been warned that she was getting into something dangerous, because after their time together, she now knew just how much Jelena loved her, and that she would forgive her, as long as she stayed.
Even if she would never admit it to anyone, she was a little overwhelmed with Jelena's love for her, it sometimes genuinely scared her. She reached out and caressed the other woman's cheek tenderly. Somehow, she had landed in another mess again, just when she thought she was in the clear.
Falling asleep finally was more her body overpowering her tired mind.

Xavi was not the kind of man to spend a lot of time with his any of girlfriends, he didn't text them every hour or so, like most of his friends and teammates did, he didn't call them whenever he had 10 spare minutes and he certainly didn't hang out with them on a daily basis. Like any of his previous relationships, he was a tad distant, giving his partner (and himself) a lot of independence and freedom. What most of the women didn't know was why he was doing that: he had football on the brain and anything more than a few hours over dinner or out and about spent together would get him to talk about it.
Or, if it wasn't football, it was sex. All his texts - if he were to send any, would turn into sexts and all his calls would become a lighter version of phone sex. And Xavi didn't want to impose his obsessions on his girlfriends, that normally didn't even get to know about that.
But even with the casual approach, Xavi not calling Ines for a whole week after his night with Fiona was rather abnormal. And he probably wouldn't have, had he not received an email from her, asking him if he wanted to go out for drinks and a talk later.
That was when Xavi understood something was wrong. First of all, he had been thinking about Fiona throughout the week, their conversation, how well they had hit it off, how she had laughed the journalist incident off or the way she looked at him right before he kissed her on the terrace. He recalled in mortifying detail their rushed sex and how they had fallen asleep so comfortably in each other's arms. In fact, whenever he thought about the sex, Xavi became irritated, since it had been so sloppy. His greatest regret was that he hadn't been able to offer Fiona a proper rumble in the sheets, something he woud've been perfectly capable of had he not drank so much. Alas, without the drinking, he would've never gotten the chance to be with her, albeit briefly, and he had to be thankful for even those few stolen hours.
Getting the call from Ines, especially after such a long silence and considering he was being summoned for a talk, Xavi understood that his relationship with his girlfriend was stale and had been so for quite a while. He had lost all passion he once had for her long before the Fiona incident, but had maintained their relation because it was comfortable and he was too busy to start looking for another. He was a very comfortable guy, especially when it came to dating and amour, but he didn't exactly want to be single either.
So Ines had been a good solution to his problems. She was busy most of the time with her charity work and otherwise spending her daddy's money around town, and didn't bother him when he didn't feel like having her around, but when he did feel like it, she was equally there. It was good. But now Xavi knew he no longer wanted to settle for that. He himself felt he needed to put in more effort and it was not Ines the one deserving it.
Xavi wasn't the type to jump to conclusions and he was far from declaring Fiona as the woman of his life and charge for her. But she was in the back of his mind permanently and so he knew he owed it to Ines to be honest with her and free himself of any prior arrangements before pursuing anything further.
Deciding that whatever she would tell him over diner, he would end it up with her, Xavi prepared for the night out. He was sure he was doing the right thing and he was well aware Ines herself was probably summoning him for the exact same thing.

Fiona woke up after an intense erotic dream featuring Xavi. It wasn't her first, but rather, she had had several every single night lately. She had tried to push her yearning for him in some back room of her mind, at least during the day, when she was trying to work or spending time with her lover, but it just seemed to return with a vengeance during the nights.
Fortunately, Jelena was already gone. For the nth time in the last couple of weeks, Fiona thanked the heavens for their different work schedules. She had actually pondered telling Jelena about it, to at least unburden herself, but then she knew she'd have to tell her about Pique, which had not been an accident at all.
She went to take a shower feeling like a complete bastard. The water washing her guilty body couldn't wash her soul, but Fiona began to wake up. Yes, she liked Jelena. Yes, Jelena was a great person, a great woman and they connected well and spent many gorgeous moments together. But they did not have a future. If she had ever stopped believing this was just convalescence for her broken heart, she had certainly just fooled herself. Even the memorable nights out had been so good because she had not had to be alone with Jelena, because they consisted of dance and alcohol and partying and pretending everything was great, when it was not.
She could not stop thinking about Xavi because her current relationship wasn't going anywhere, while he Catalan was a great promise. She had not connected so well with any other man, not even with Carlos.
She deserved to try to be truly happy again. She deserved a new shot, a new opportunity. And being with Jelena had always had an expiration date. Zlatan had told her just yesterday that Xavi had broken up with Ines. This was the sign Fiona needed, because to her, it was obvious she had done it because of her.
Fiona stepped out of the shower with the decision in mind. She was sure Jelena would understand. After all, she had made it clear from the start that the other woman was just her pitstop.
But when Jelena came home extremely late, looking exhausted and ready to cry, pouring all the world's misery hanging on her shoulders onto her lover's ready ear, almost pleading for warmth and holding Fiona so tightly, that it made the younger woman wince, Fiona could not find the strength to give Jelena another blow.
“I'll draw you a bath. You'll feel better, I promise.”
Jelena needed her. And Fiona could not forget how the other woman had offered her help and opened her house and heart for her when she had needed it. She could not abandon her now. If anything, they were best friends and best friends do not leave one another in hard times.
That night, Fiona didn't sleep. Jelena's arms around her grounded her, when she wanted to fly, feeling heavy around her waist and she was also afraid her subconscious would betray her again and bring her impossible Xavi dreams.
