Lorien's Last Breath

Aug 18, 2012 12:11

This is a filk song that I have written. You can hear it sung a cappella by me -- as best I can -- here.

Lorien's Last Breath lyrics:
Tune is "Gather Us In" by Marty Haugen
I was the first at Time's Beginning.
I was the first to open my eyes.
I was the first to comprehend questions:
Why is blue the color of skies?

With me were friends, awakened thereafter.
With me were siblings, blood that was mine.
With me My Love and her gentle laughter:
We swore forever our hearts would entwine.

I told the first joke and solved the first mystery.
I was the first to play "Let's Pretend".
I was the first to contemplate history...
and realize that Start leads always to End.

I heard my friends coughing and sneezing.
I heard my siblings cry out in pain.
I heard My Love struggle through wheezing
to say that she loved me forever again...

I who was there at the first dying,
I who saw Death win his first fight,
I who first fell to my knees crying...
now I am here at the end of Stars' Light.

I have had children pass on before me.
I have seen empires rise and then fall.
I know the truth: All love turns to ashes!
Run how you will but Death takes us all.

What was it for? I still have no answer.
Why did I do all the things I have done?
Why do I fight entropy's cancer?
Why should I care for this the last sun?

And yet I stand guard to watch its last gleaming.
I hold my hands close to catch its last heat.
I am alive, and Life keeps on dreaming,
and keeps on believing that Death can be beat!

I sing this last song though I preach to the choir.
I who was first sing the last serenade.
And when I am done, so will the star's fire
into silence and darkness
flicker and fade...
