Parties, shoes, and picnics in this very interesting entry.

Tons of stuff going on lately. On Friday, we hosted a smashing party celebrating Hans's new love of Hendrick's gin. We had about 20 people over including Liz, Wes & Maggie, and the rest physics people. Someone wrote a thank-you note on the wet-erase board on the fridge! (This wet-erase board is still displaying my Christmas doodles from December.) We went through a bottle and a half of Hendrick's, but didn't make enough of a dent in the rest of the liquor, which is still mostly left over from the Halloween party of 2007. It's a good thing that alcohol doesn't go bad. Anyway, everyone had a great time. We learned that I am a double-jointed freak, and my arm doesn't rotate like normal people's arms, which meant that I had to crawl under the kitchen table for a little while. Well, it made sense when I was drunk.

On Saturday, I went on a hunt for new shoes. Last time I puppy-sat for Wes & Maggie's dogs, one of them left a nice mess right in front of the door, and I stepped in it and then was unable to get it completely clean. At some point, the same shoe acquired a hole where some stitching had come loose. It took a long time to find a new pair of brown sneakers, I visited both South Point and Crabtree malls.

Springtime is just about here, and the weather is warming up. You'd never guess that it snowed a couple of weeks ago. On Sunday, the weather was gorgeous and Hans suggested having a picnic lunch in the Duke Gardens. There were a lot of people with the same idea! When the weather starts getting warm, everyone wants to be outside. We watched a large, very well-behaved German Shepherd for a while. We also noticed that Duke has clipped the wings of several of their ducks. One duck was annoying another, and the annoyed was unable to escape.

Last night, we attended another sort of impromptu celebration because Abijit (sp? sorry!) was taking his prelim exam. If a student passes his prelim, then he's ABD (all but dissertation), and if he doesn't, he's booted. Well, of course Abijit (I think there might be an "h" in there somewhere?) passed his, and a bunch of folks went out to dinner and hung out at a gelato and dessert shop. Much fun.

Tonight is rest, and then the Duke/UNC basketball game on Wednesday.
