Singapore Food Trip Day 1

Aug 21, 2009 21:02

I'm not a witty writer and I am unable to convey my emotions through words. Even as I write this, my brain is straining to pick out the right things to say so I am able to share even a small bit of what I experienced during my five day trip to Singapore.

One thing is for sure, I went there to eat. And ate I did. A lot. I shopped a bit,  toured here and there, but for me the high light of the trip was the wonderful smorgasbord of cuisines available in such a little city.

I have too many food photos to dump in one post. So for the benefit of slower internet connections, I'm splitting them up per day.

First up, dinner on Aug. 13, 2009 at the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant!

To the man or woman of long ago, who decided they should try out these shelled crawlers on the coast of our seas, I salute you. Your discovery has made the world a little bit more wonderful to live in!

Chili Crabs! <3 My fave from this meal.

On the lower left, Black Pepper Crabs. We failed to take a close-up though... we forgot 'cuz we were so hungry! XD

Tofu with which I believe to be Enoki Mushrooms. I am not sure if there were noodles in this dish, or if it was just the stems of the 'shrooms. Either way, it was delish!

Drunken Prawns! Served with a broth mixed with brandy. Not such a hot dish for me, as the alcohol was (intentionally?) not cooked away completely.

And a new dish for me! Cereal Prawns! I love this... I may have reached a small step to enlightenment from these. HAHA! Who would've thought that semi-sweet cereal (think unground cerelac) would work with prawns?? It's genius!

Most of the items we ate had a spicy kick. So served along with our meal was deep-fried mantou. Yep, the same stuff siopao bread is made out of. Only this time, dunked it a hot skillet of heart-stopping oil. Woohoo!

After starting our trip with a bang of a meal, we walk a few meters from the establishment and head to Jones the Grocer. A hub of both local and international gourmet products, including a large walk-in temperature controlled cheese room. Eager to try out free samples then leave without buying any (lol! Boss' idea... XD), we were quite disappointed to find the cheese room closed. Maybe they knew I was in the area...

Tons of things on display. It was making me high, I swear. Flavoured nougats, wines and pastries among others. I'd kill to find a place like this in Manila.

This, my friends, is a perfect way to start your travels.
