Scott Pilgrim

I saw the movie and then read volumes 3-6 this weekend. As usual, the original source for the adapted screenplay had more character depth and information.

Ramona leaves her exes behind with the label evil, but mostly she has been the one doing the damage. Scott's a somewhat clueless emo wimp attached to whomever will share their bed with him and buy him some food. In the books Envy Adams is much more sympathetic than she is in the movie. But there are other side characters who fill the roles of bitchy girls who aren't impressed with Mr. Pilgrim.

He is roused to life and improbable battlefield victories by the idea of fighting for love and Ramona's mysterious detachment, which perhaps mimic the most engaging experiences he's had in his life--playing video games.

Although he is too cool for Knives and her parent's bourgeois expectations (or maybe just chivalrous), Scott chooses to waste his days on a couch in the attic room his parents pay for when things get tough.

It's hard for me to be optimistic that Scott and Ramona will find great success and happiness, but what do I know? Maybe the idea is that you can't have both. A slacker manifesto.

I found myself thinking about the creator whose middle name Lee clued me into his being Asian. He must be a pretty hard worker to have gotten where he is.
