They've Finally Gone and Done it!

Disney has finally lost it and dropped the quality of it's name down the crapper. I've suspected this for quite some time now... ever since they started popping out the Aladdin sequels (Return of Jafar, King of Thieves) and the quality of the animation/colouring etc was down considerably. In fact, after Aladdin, Lion King was the last movie that I liked of Disney's for several years. Didn't like "Pocahontas", "Hunchback of Notre Dame", the remakes of "The Absentminded Professor", "101 Dalmations" etc. "Mulan" was the first one that liked in a long time and "Tarzan" was okay for story - though the animation in it is absolutely eye popping (got the collectors edition DVD set this week).

Now IMO, Disney has hit another dry spell. Both "An Emperor's New Groove" and "Atlantis", were both pretty lame. Didn't find "New Groove" that funny and "Atlantis" was pretty predictable; there were also rumours that it was a rip off of "Nadia of Blue Water" (an anime).

Now this summer, Disney is proving me right once again with the sequels of both "Peter Pan" and "Cinderella".

I'm in animation school and am very picky about what I see. Now I saw the trailers for "Return to Neverland" and it looks do-able. The story is kind like the movie "Hook" a few years ago, but the animation looks good and the diologue isn't have bad by the sound of it.

But how in the world do you have a sequel for "Cinderella" I'd like to know. She marries the prince, goes to live with him in the castle, the mice go with her, the mother and sisters get what they deserve, the end. How do you build on that? Apparently they've found a way.

I'm not exactly sure if it takes place after the first movie, or has an overlap or what, but what ever it is, it looks like prue crap. Diologue is bad, animation is bad, the quality is bad. Why even bother doing it? Because the kiddies don't care about that? All they see is a new movie with their favourite characters and they want it.

I wonder if Walt Disney would like what his company is spitting out now; probably not. It's become a huge monopoly and it's not just about the cartoons any longer or families enjoying themselves together with quality time.

Whenever I tell someone that I'm studying animation, the first comment is "Oh. Computers?" which the answer is "No, haven't touched them yet." The second comment is "So, you're going to work for Disney?" Usually I make a face and tell them that Disney is my last resort for an animation company. I'd go to FOX, WB, Mainframe Entertainment, Big Idea, Pixar, Dreamworks, PDI, etc before I'd ever consider going to Disney.

I just can't believe that Disney has come down to making crappy sequels to their good movies just to make the extra buck when they could do good movies in a little more time and then cash in.

*shakes head*
