Those of you out in LJ-land may or may not know that I am on vacation this week. My aunt, uncle and I are visiting the Big Apple, the first time I've been here in over 20 years(not including going form LaGuardia to JFK in 2000 to go to Israel).
We got here on Saturday after a very enjoyable flight on JetBlue (any airline on which I can catch up on Torchwood is an airline for me). We then had about a 40 minute drive on Long Island to get to our hotel in Huntington. After that, food and sleep.
Yesterday was history day, family and otherwise. In the morning, we went to Oyster Bay to visit
Sagamore Hills, Teddy Roosevelt's residence. It was a gorgeous late 19th century home decorated in a very..uh..manly style(elephant foot wastepaper basket, anyone?) After lunching on one of the largest burger's I've ever met it was off to Elmont to visit some dead relatives. Both my dad's mom's family and dad's dad's family is buried in Beth David cemetery there. It was fascinating seeing a really old Jewish cemetery. It was quite different from the Christian cemeteries I've seen of the same tie period. I saw headstones of family members I've never even heard of before.
Once we were done there we went to Oceanside LI to see my aunt's cousin, Phyllis and her family. We had a great dinner and I got to meet some of my live extended family :) . Pictures will be up soon.
Today, we're heading into Brooklyn to see where my dad and aunt lived when they were very little and then onto Maywood, NJ to see where they spent most of their childhood. There will be museums, shopping and more exploring to come and, as long as I remember, I will write about it all on this here journal.
