schmoop_bingo anniversary - miles apart prompt. ~700 words. Title is from Shakira's "Lo hecho está hecho". Part of a larger 'verse that may never ever get finished but I like to pretend it will. This is also a very late birthday gift for
soporta. ♥
Brendon’s life is all about memorizing dates and schedules, balancing what little personal time he’s got left over from tour with the few days here and there that his boyfriend gets off from work. So, when the reminder on his phone pops up, telling him there’s an event scheduled for today, he almost ignores it. Almost being a relative term, Brendon actually does check the calendar on his phone, half-awake and convinced that it’s an awards ceremony or a hotel night. Instead, there’s a small heart, followed by the the initials S.R. + B.U. It takes a moment for it to click, but once it does, he’s out of his bunk with a start. He checks the clock he’s got running on Eastern Time constantly (it helps when Reid is actually where he’s supposed to be), relieved to find that it’s the afternoon of the previous day across the world in the US, no matter where today’s case may have taken the team.
He sets an actual alarm for later, to call Spencer once it’s midnight in whatever zone he’s in (he needs to make sure first, so it’s more like an alarm to set an alarm), then shoves his phone back in the pocket of his sweatpants. He rummages around in the cabinets for breakfast cereal, humming whatever tune happens to run through his head at the moment. The day runs as usual; his band mates bitch at him for eating all the cereal, and he checks his phone every five minutes for a message from his boyfriend. When he finally gets it (“Finally,” Ryan says, and Brendon just rolls his eyes as his fingers fly across his phone’s keyboard.)
It turns out that Reid’s team is on the east coast, and that Reid specifically leaves a bit earlier than usual just before midnight. “Happy Anniversary!” he says when he picks up his phone, panting a little.
“You took the words right out of my mouth,” Brendon replies. “How are you doing on this fabulous afternoon? Or early morning over there in the US.”
“I’m tired,” Reid admits, “but really glad to talk to you. I missed you.”
“Me too,” Brendon says, and they chat a bit about what’s been going on, the places they’ve visited and people they’ve met. Spencer specifically leaves out the case details, one of the few things Brendon had insisted on when they first started dating. Unless it is directly related to his boyfriend’s health or wellness, Brendon wants no part.Reid is fine with it, because he never wants to hear about the grittier details of Brendon’s life either, just little anecdotes of his day or things of the same nature. Sometimes they just whisper sweet nothings and comforts to each other, but today they’re laughing. Brendon can hear the strain Spencer’s voice, and he knows there has to be some in his own, but they both ignore it. When Brendon has to leave for an interview, and Reid has to go back to his team, they exchange “I love you”s.
He thinks that he hears a “See you soon” on the other end before the click, but it could just be wishful thinking. He smiles during the interview, laughs during the rehearsal and grins during the show. Backstage, he collapses on the small couch while things get packed up and everyone gets ready to leave.
When he gets to his hotel room, there’s a package with his name on it sitting on his bed. It has what looks to be a home address in Virginia on the outside, with multiple stamps from all the places they’ve been on tour, too late to reach him until now. Inside is a key and a yellowed piece of notebook paper with a gate combination scrawled on it. He sends a text message consisting solely of x’s and o’s to his boyfriend and gets back a heart.
