Old fic

This is one of the two fics I discovered while browsing past entries of my personal. journal. They were written as birthday fics for one of my old friends.

Title: Red
Summary: Her first glance of Sakura has Karin fuming.
Warning: Slight leniency with canon

As soon as they were certain the Konoha ninja weren't following them - plus a few extra miles just in case - they stopped to make camp. The exercise had done little to defuse Karin's fast approaching tantrum - in fact it had seemed to fuel it - so Sasuke, not in the mood for overseeing screaming matches, sent her to get water. Karin snatched up the container, speechless in her fury, and marched off, her back ruler-straight with indignation. A few long moments later they heard a fury-filled scream.

As the sound escaped her lips Karin slammed her foot into the trunk of an ancient oak tree standing serenely beside her. Without pausing to see the result she stormed on. Moments later the tree gave up its fight with gravity and keeled over to hit the ground with an almighty crash. By the time Karin had reached water three other trees had met an identical fate.

Karin flung herself down on the bank and stared at her reflection, finally facing what had started the whole ordeal. Forehead creased in a deep frown, she reached up and tentatively tugged on a lock of her hair. As she did her mind involuntarily flashed back to her very first look at Sasuke-kun's former teammates. More specifically, Sakura Haruno. Even more specifically, Haruno's hair,

Pink.

Pink!

Goddamn PINK!

And, of course, her own hair. Red. An essential element to create pink. Something that connected them.

The fates were cackling madly at her, she knew. The only thing that should connect the two of them was their quest to earn Sasuke-kun's heart. Which Karin was going to win. She didn't just think so, she knew so. She understood men. She knew how to get them. After all, she had run a prison full of them. And she knew exactly where Haruno had gone wrong.

Her inability to solve anything without her fists. Karin had heard horror stories of how the third member of team seven had suffered under Haruno's fists on nights where insomnia had struck them collectively and Sasuke had to either tell them a story or listen to Suigetsu and Karin bitch at each other all night. Men didn't like violent girls. Well that wasn't entirely true, Karin reiterated. Kunoichi had no problem finding bedmates. But men didn't like women who couldn't solve anything without violence. Karin could. She could twist words around and create clever sentences peppered with promise, ensuring her that her bed wouldn't be empty whenever she felt in the mood.

Sakura Haruno had none of this ability and that was why Karin was going to win. Feeling elated, she filled the container and practically floated back to camp.
