My two newbies first. My twobies, if you will. And you will. OR ELSE!
Terry McGinnis
So, Bruce Wayne is just about to graduate. He will go on to have an amazing career saving lives and the soul of Gotham City and the entire damn world several times as Batman. But as Superman will one day tell him, "You'll outlive us all, Bruce. You're too stubborn to die." And the tragic thing about Batman as he ages is that eventually, by his very nature, he'll push all of his friends and family away until there's nothing left but the Bat. And then one day, he won't physically be able to have that, either.
It took a heart attack and being forced to defend himself with a gun - the very symbol of everything he despised in the world - but the day finally came for Bruce. He closed up the Batcave, essentially gave up Wayne Enterprises, and vowed, "Never again."
Twenty years later (about fifty years after Bruce graduated from Fandom High), a troubled teenager named Terry McGinnis found out about Old Man Wayne's secret past on the same night his father was killed due to some shady happenings in the corporate megapower, Wayne-Powers. Unfortunately, Bruce was so checked out as part of his long-standing life as a hermit, living alone in Wayne Manor, that Terry was unable to get his help either through official channels or through vigilante means. So Terry stole the last Batsuit, a marvel of technology, and went to get some Bat-style vengeance on the guy who killed his father. (And actually? TERRY TOTALLY KILLED THE GUY. NO IDEA HOW KIDS WB LET THAT HAPPEN, BUT THEY DID.)
It took a little bit of convincing (more specifically, some pleading after Bruce killed the suit's power remotely, letting Terry get beaten half to death), but Terry's passion to not only clean up some crime but right some of his own wrongs pulled Bruce back from the fringe, leading to him becoming Terry's mentor (and daytime employer, as a way to explain why Terry always has to run around doing whatever Bruce says) and (ironically) a father figure. Meanwhile, it also eventually brought Bruce back into control of Wayne-Powers.
Of course, Bruce is as demanding of the troubled teenagers he collects as he ever was, so even after a few years of experience, he still sends Terry out to train with kung fu masters or, in this case, to a crazy damn island where he'll encounter stuff way worse than nearly anything else he's had to deal with. (Excluding the Joker, naturally.)
Anyway, that's the basic story of Batman Beyond and why Terry's coming to Fandom. Before I ramble on even longer than I have already, let's hit some bullet points:
*Terry has the Batsuit with him. It lets him do
a lot of cool crap. He's going to wear it on patrol a lot. DEAL WITH THE BATMAN, FANDOM.
*Terry spent a month in juvie when he was 14. He's grown up a lot since then. Becoming Batman is a redemptive choice for him. It's not something he did because he needed to control the world in some way like it was for Bruce. It's a means of controlling himself and making up for anything bad he ever did.
*He's still going to punch you if you deserve it, though. At the very least, he's going to mouth off at you. This is a much jokier, sarcastic Batman than the original ever was. And he's more likely to punch you while out of costume than the original ever was.
*Repenting for his father's death, sarcastic, teenager with girl troubles, wears a costume and shoots grapples out of his forearms... Yes, he is Spider-Man in a Batman suit in the future.
*Despite being from the future, Terry knows very little about Fandom and nothing about the people here. Bruce decided not to prepare him other than "It's a very strange place. Seriously, have some women's clothing. You'll turn into a girl at some point. REALLY." And with the way class years go, how's he supposed to know in what year Terry will show up?
*Also, he probably doesn't know most of the DC people in Fandom due to their not existing in the DCAU. Sorry for any existential crises this causes.
*And finally, thanks to a weird retcon I've grown to love over time (I hated it at first but it just keeps making more sense), Terry is Bruce's biological son. Terry doesn't know it. Bruce does. It was part of an aborted secret government project to make sure there was always a Batman that Bruce had no knowledge of. But destiny happens.
*Thankfully, Terry is much more monogamous than Bruce and will probably not end up sleeping with girls the old man has. It would be weird. (I'm totally having Dana break up with him before he leaves Gotham, though. I'm not playing out a long distance NPC relationship.)
And that's all on Terry for now.

*The player.
*An intern architect in Chicago who is in the middle of deadline hell for the foreseeable future. Sigh.
*On Central Time.
*Mostly available after work (about 7 PM Central) and weekends (although Saturdays keep ending up busy recently). I can epically SP some threads during the day at work if I'm light or it's really needed or I desperately need a mental break, but this is very uncommon.
*I'm cracky and love puns. If I get too cracky, please pass the glue.
