Shower of Music- Dance night -non-drunk edition

Sep 21, 2007 11:01

So lets get on with what happened last weekend at the music event.

Before I go into it I just wanted to thank all you guys who gave your suggestions and what not, it helped a lot and was much appreciated.

So I get there on my rusty shit bike with flat tired and head in, sweating.  Takeshi and Saru were setting stuff up, and Hiromi (dude) was watching and chatting.  Hiromi I think owns the coffee shop, and is a real nice, laid back guy.  Saru is the techno DJ, but also a fun, nice dude.  Takeshi is the mastermind behind the event, and is a real nice guy himself.

Well, they start putting shit together and I am getting anxious since well, I have to play my shit in like, 20 minutes.  Turns out Takeshi was busy with some stuff, so he had Saru show me what to do.  Saru, btw, does not really know too much English, and it was loud there, so basically he was turning knobs, pointing, and saying shit like, "Koko ni, knob turn shite, demo, bassu wa *mufled mufled * niwa *mufled* dewanai.  OKAY?"  I nodded and wondered how bad this was going to be.

Luckily I was a genius ahead of time and burned two CDs, both with the same music, so that way when I played one, I could just skip to the second song on the other Cd player, and mix it from the beginning with auto-dub.  I mean I did the easiest shit you could do, not real mixing, just transitioning.   Though doing it looks cool.  Switching the headphones over, listening to the end of the current song to see where to mix into the second one, setting it up, then pausing it, then when the time comes, slide the master control slider over and hit play on the other CD.  It may sound complicated, but it's really easy in practice.

So It hits 8 but Takeshi decides to wait since there are very few people there yet.  I was told that the last event packed the place out, and the same was expected for this night, but early on there was no real turn out.  We had maybe 20 people in there, where Takeshi was expecting probobly around 40 at that time.  Still, at 8:30 he told me I should just play my set, and see what goes.  So I did.  Here is what i rocked out...

1.  Mr. Your on Fire Mr.  -Liars (Mike sug)
2.  D.A.N.C.E - Justice  (bob sug)
3.  Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah
4.  Forget which one... - The Go Team
5.  Two More Years - Bloc Party MSTRKRFT remix
6.  Sweat Decends -Les Savy Fav (Corbo and Mike sug)
7.  House of Jealous Lovers - The Rapture (Corbo sug)
8.  Pickpocket - ATDI (Mike,Corbo Sug)
9.  198090 - Thunderbirds are Now
10.  Stronger - Kanye West

I would have liked to have had tiem to do more, maybe some LCD Sound System, or more MSTRKRFT stuff, or somethign else not hitting me, but thats what I played.

It all went over really well, adn all the transitions were good.  It was funny though, when I started working from song 1 to song 2, checking the jump in points, etc, I had the headphones on and was well, doign stuff, actually looking liek a DJ, and pretty much everyone with a camera in there ran up to me and started taking pictures, which was kinda weird.  I felt super poser-ish, but at the same time I was doing what I was doing, so, yeah...  It was cool.

So my set went by lightening quick, and next thing you know Takeshi is doign hsi set and I am chatting at a table with some of the J-girls I know from the place.  They all said I did great, though I am sure they had no idea what the fuck they were listening to.  Basically I had a few free beers, chatted with people and had a good time.  My casual Japanese was workable, so it was fun.  It wasn't until like, after 11 that a lot of people started showing up, including this one girl and her friend that I ranted about before.  The girl was just like, that perfect cute/hot mix.  I don't know if she has a bf or anything yet, but she knew me from the BBQ I went to the week before, though somehow I don't remember her.  This is okay though, because I was in rare-money form at the BBQ, so I can only hope she had a positive impression of me.  She did however get drunk quick and run home with her friend feeling sick, which was too bad.  I had more conversation with her friend, since her friend spoke some English and was aggresive at using it.  Oh well, hopefully we will see her again.

Takeshi asked me if I would want to do it another night.  I told him yes, so who knows, I might be doing this again, which would be kick ass.  I would not mind playing the coffee house again, but Takeshi is trying to move up to legitimate local clubs, and will be playing in one soon, though he has a lineup already for it.  I'd love to be in the next one, jsut well, jsut because it's fun.

So all and all it was great, I just wish more people were there when I played, or drunker since the night was young still.  But I mean, people were really dancing  when I was playing, then it died down again, and got dancy at the end, so I mean, I know my shit kicked ass.  I think if it was later in the night it would have been nuts.  Oh well.  At least i can now say I DJed in Japan, and when girls ask my my hobbie at clubs in Tokyo I can say I "DJ from time to time."  Haha.  What a horrible line.  I shall use it frequently.

So yeah, once again thanks everyone for your help.
