125. Wideacre by Philippa Gregory. This is the first in a trilogy of novels about the Lacey family, landowners for generations and their trials and tribulations. In this first book daughter Beatrice Lacey, upon learning that her fate as daughter is to be married off and be taken off the land by her husband, vows to change her fate. She lies, cheats, steals, murders and commits a number of sins along the way. The book was horribly fascinating in the manner of 'what will she do next'? However, the denouement was obvious from about half way through the book, the set up to it rather tepid at best and the finale itself rather flat. It fell into the 'the book is due, I'll just skip exposition and put in two sentences to explain where this character who has been integral to Beatrice's plans throughout the entire novel ended up.' There are two more books in the series and I will read them both, but so far I much prefer her Tudors novels to this series. At least Anne Boleyn was likeable.
