Uncle Bob Is Doing Well

I went to visit my Uncle Bob who, as you may remember, has lung cancer. I was seriously nervous, which may have actually helped; I had invented horrible scenarios in my mind, he would be gaunt, bedridden, he would be unable to talk, he would be just this side of death's door. As it turns out, he was like that, about three weeks ago, and he's been getting steadily better since then. He's noticeably thinner, and his voice is raspy and low, but he was up and about. He made eggs for my sister and I, which was oddly reassuring.

At this point, there's no way of knowing if he's really going to beat the cancer. Though the radiation therapy has been going as well as it can, they won't be able to see for sure whether they've managed to clean up his tissues for a few more weeks. But he's hopeful, and that's more heartening than you could know. Uncle Bob has never exactly been an optimist - more of a bitter realist. Aunt Dot always has been an optimist. Actually, she's kind of bubbly; she says, "I'm the hippie, Bob's the yuppie." They're both optimistic right now, and that really means a lot.
