After Jack helped Charlie up, he heard the so-called monster not too far behind him. His only chance now would be to run as fast as he can, as far as he can, towards the beach. The beach was their safe haven; the monster would not touch him there.
But he knew he wasn’t alone. Charlie and Kate were still in the jungle, and he couldn’t just abandon them to save himself. So, he ran, tried to draw the monster away from them. He threw himself into a jumble of bushes, and the monster seemed to become disinterested in him, and went the other way. Was it going after Charlie? Was it going after Kate? Or was it just tired of running and was going after easier prey?
He did not dare leave his place in the bushes until the monster was definitely gone. He heard something being carried on the wind, as if someone were counting.
1...2...3...4...5... The only other person he knew who would count to five to face their fears was Kate, after he had told her about that earlier. That had to mean she was close by, and still alive. He let out a deep sigh when he realized he was holding his breath, and when he was sure the monster was gone, he crept out of the jungle, following what now seemed to be Charlie’s voice, carried across the jungle.
And that’s when he looked up and saw a mangled body in the trees. He crept closer to get a better look. Anyone else might have been terrified, and tried to get as far away from it as possible, but Jack was always the curious one.
“What is-” Jack heard Charlie began, but Jack cut him off.
“It’s the pilot,” he said, recognizing the clothing.
After Kate made sure he was all right, and they both found out what exactly it was that Jack did to avoid getting eaten by the monster, they made their way back to the beach.
“How did you do it?” Charlie asked, while Jack played around with the transceiver that he got from the cockpit.
“How did I do what?” Jack asked, looking up from the work he was doing.
“Keep yourself together. You know, avoid becoming massively terrified, like I was,” Charlie said, emphasizing ‘massively’.
Kate and Jack just looked at each other for a moment, and broke out into laughter. “It’s a long story,” he said simply
“Oh, but you could tell her, I suppose?” Charlie asked, raising an eyebrow. “Oh, that’s all fine and dandy. Let the woman know, but leave the daft rock star in the dark. Makes all kinds of sense.”
“It was a boring story anyway,” Kate said, but she still couldn’t stop herself from giggling. Jack guessed it was from nearly being eaten by a gigantic mysterious monster in the middle of a jungle.
“You seem to have enjoyed it,” Charlie mumbled.
“If you reaaaally want to know, I’ll tell you some day. But for now, let’s just try to keep our attention focused on getting this transceiver to work, and get back to the beach before the others begin to worry.”
“Right,” Charlie said, as Jack tweaked the transceiver and tried again. “Anything?” he asked.
“Nope. We’re in the middle of the jungle, I doubt we’ll get much of a signal,” Jack said.
Five minutes later Charlie asked again, and got the same answer. He asked again, and again, until Jack finally lost it.
“Charlie! I will tell you if something happens, okay?” Jack snapped.
“Hmpf, figures,” Charlie mumbled.
“What figures?” Kate asked.
“He’s calm and collected in the face of danger, but he can’t even take my constant chattering.”
“Charlie…I don’t think anyone could take your constant chattering,” Kate said, smirking.
“Very funny. You are a regular comedian!” Charlie did not look amused.
Jack, meanwhile, had pretended not to hear Charlie, but he was secretly smiling. The rock star managed to figure him out after only an hour trek through the jungle.
