Wow, I've neglected this place lately. >_> Kelly, thank you for the beta... whenever that was. A month or so ago, at least. ^_^

Theme: F is for flavor; the general atmosphere of a place or situation and the effect that it has on people.
Disclaimer: Pfffffft, I own nothing. I wish.

“If this place had a flavor, it’d taste just like the Mess Tent’s food,” Hawkeye declares to Sidney as they sit in the VIP tent after a particularly fervent session of love-making. Hawkeye has a tendency to ramble on after sex; Sidney prefers to quietly fall asleep, but he knows that this is a time where Hawkeye will admit to things he won’t talk about during the day. He always listens.

“Really?” Sidney questions, half-sleepy, half-curious as to what prompted this random comment.

“I think so. It makes sense, doesn’t it? That’s the overall feel of the place - disgusting.” Hawkeye nods, but then a frown graces his features. “There’s no ‘good’, here is there? I mean, it’s war; there can’t be, right?”

“What do you think?” Sidney asks, able to sense something’s wrong without even looking up at Hawkeye.

“Well, there’s mindless killing, boys dying when they should be at home at the movies, or on their first dates. Innocent people are killed daily! How could there be any good to that?” Hawkeye asks. Sidney knows it’s rhetorical; he waits for Hawkeye to continue. “But, I mean, there’s more. There’s something else here, you know? If it weren’t for this place, would I have ever met BJ? Or Radar? Or Colonel Potter? Or...” Hawkeye trails off and looks at Sidney and Sidney knows what he’s trying to say even though he doesn’t actually say it out loud.

“Do you think it’s wrong for happiness to spring from this place?”

“Yeah! Isn’t it?”

“I consider it amazing. Don’t you?”

Hawkeye thinks about this for a second, then smiles. “Yeah. That’s true. But then, my Mess Tent flavor doesn’t quite fit anymore.”

“Yes it does,” Sidney responds, looking up finally.

“How?”

“Think about it a second, Hawkeye.”

Hawkeye thinks on it for a minute before realizing that while the food sucks most of the time, every once in a while, something good comes along. Hawkeye smiles. “I get it. How do you manage to follow my trains of thought, Sidney? I think I’m rubbing off on you.”

“That’s a little frightening,” Sidney jokes, but conveys with his eyes that ‘it’s okay - I like being able to better understand you.’ Hawkeye smiles and nods. “So what made this the topic of the night?”

“I don’t know. It was just something I was thinking about, I guess.”

“You normally have a reason for it.”

“You know me too well, Sidney,” Hawkeye smirks, trying to dissolve the heavy mood. Sidney looks at him pointedly, and he nods. “It’s something my dad mentioned in his last letter; every place has a certain ‘flavor,’ and even if it’s horrible, there’s something good about it. I guess I was just trying to find the ‘good’. Then, when I thought I had, it made me feel...”

“Guilty that you could be happy when a lot of others couldn’t?”

Hawkeye looks at him and smiles, “Yeah. Exactly.” He shakes his head. “But now I feel better. I guess it’s okay that there is some ‘good’, here. I mean, that’s what keeps us all from losing our minds, isn’t it?” He pauses. “Thanks, Sidney. You always know how to help.”

“What can I say? It’s a gift.”

Hawkeye laughs and lies his head down. They’re together on the small cot, so it’s crowded, but neither move as neither mind. “Good night.”

“Good night, Hawkeye.”

Hawkeye falls asleep first, drifting off quickly. Sidney stays awake for a few more minutes, looking at the man next to him. He smiles, knowing that he’s found the ‘good,’ too.

He’s sleeping next to him.

-End

Enjoy. xD
