A few weeks ago, I had one of those terrifyingly real nightmares about zombies, bridges and tornadoes. My alarm sounded before I could resolve any of the tension that had built up, and since then, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Every time I drive over the bridge from the dream, I flash back to the crawling bodies and screaming winds. To try to work it out of my system, I'm thinking of giving NaNoWriMo another shot this year, and basing it all on what happened after all the crazy in my dream.
Since it's been a few months since I last posted anything here, you might be wondering just what the hell is going on.
I suppose the biggest news is that we escaped town. In July, we found out that my sister-in-law was looking for a new tenant for her house just outside of town. We drove down to take a look at the place, and moved in two weeks later. The place is fantastic, though not the sort of home I ever planned on living in. Until now, we gravitated towards more historic homes, places with character. Here, we're so deep in suburbia that I feel like I need to go trade in the truck for a minivan and my two-point-five kids and a dog. The neighbors keep things interesting. Sometimes I have to wonder if we've been sucked into some strange sitcom, with the cookie cutter houses and wacky neighbors.
I underwent a 'restructuring' at work, which means that I got a new boss and new co-workers and more stress, but of course not more money. The bank just went through a round of layoffs as well, which I sweated through but thankfully survived. I am on a much needed vacation this week. Chris is working nights again, so we're able to at least spend the mornings together while I'm off, and I have the evenings to post nonsense on LJ and clean the house.
We kicked off this vacation of mine with a Mountain Goats show in St. Augustine. The show was, of course, amazing. Bill accompanied us, and pulled a classic Bill move by leaving between sets to find a convenience store, and then asking the leading man of the other band, John Vanderslice, to throw away his trash. Chris pulled his own signature move by spilling a beer all over his shoe. In an attempt to actually see the stage this time, I wore heels, and am now paying the price with the endless suffering of my feet.
We survived the barrage of hurricanes with no major damage. Hurricane Charley did spin a nasty thunderstorm this way, and we lost our motherboard to a power surge, but that has been remedied since. We lost some frozen food to Frances, as we were without power for almost a whole day - which is nothing compared to some of our other Floridians. By the time Jeanne came through, we were old pros at dealing with storms and so we drank Captain Morgan and played board games with my mom, who was sheltering with us. My stubborn father slept in his truck that night, not wanting to leave their house, but not feeling safe there either.
So, I suppose that is about all for now. How have YOU been?
