Sondheim concert at the Hollywood Bowl--- FRIGGIN' AMAZING!!! It was great seeing all those wonderful old actors doing their thing.
Audra MacDonald (sp?) was my favorite performer of the evening. She has a tremendous voice! Vanessa Williams was great, too, but she didn't sing some of my favorite songs from Into the Woods. Oh, no, they let Bernadette Peters sing the witch's songs! Which, of course, was fantastic. Jason Alexander sang Free very nicely, with some other guy who also did a great job. Carol Burnett did Not Getting Married, which I think is a very funny song, and she did it excellently. Someone I didn't know sang Tonight. He was great; I wish I knew who it was (Logan? Lauren? AJ? You guys know?). Angela Lansbury... MRS LOVETT. Sorry, Patti, but that character belongs to Angela. Some performers, however, weren't as good. Josh Groban (cover your ears, Kelly) was off tonight. Len Cariou and Elaine Stritch sounded very... old. Also, although she was still very expressive (and overall I liked her for that), Barbara Cook has lost a bit of her range and control.
Overall, it was extremely cool. (Except for when Angela Lansbury fell during the curtain call. But she got back up again, and Logan said he saw her afterwards walking around ok.)
Some highlights...
Seeing STEPHAN SONDHEIM, the master, in person.
Having Warren Beatty and Barbara Streissand walk out onstage. (Neither, however, sang. Acceptable for the former, incomprehensible for the latter.)
Seeing Jason Robert Brown there.
And... Morgan turned to me and said, "Look over there!" Standing about two feet away from me was ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER!!! (My 2nd favorite composer after Sondheim).
Ah, well, I'm gone July 10-17, so I'll see you all later!
