National non-news, domestic (non-CBC/BBC) public radio programs ranked from best to worst:

1. Radio Lab. What is time? Where does morality come from? Why do we sleep? Each week this show asks a simple question and makes fascinating radio out of it. Part science show, part avant-garde documentary. Totally brilliant.

I agree about Rick Steves. He is such a dork! But his TV show is pretty good. My mom adores him and bought some of his books (which further proves that he is a dork).
I grew up overhearing Prairie Home Companion. My dad always had it on. We should be older to like it but I even found it interesting when I was 8.

Locally, I want to give a special award to "Weekday with Steve Scher." Except on Fridays, when he lets wiser people do most of the talking, Steve regularly reveals himself to be a dumbass of the first water.

I agree, he gets on my nerves too. You could do a drinking game with how often he starts a question with some variation on "Give us a sense of..." The Friday panel (and Vaughn Palmer's news from Canada, on Wednesdays) are usually the only worthwhile times to listen to that show.

Do they still do The Plant Man? That was my favorite, mostly just b/c of the theme song. :-)

I do rather enjoy the Swing Years and Beyond, though.
