I lurked for a long long time until I got my eljay account in January 2009. And then I only really used it for commenting and gradually delurking. My first fandom related post was April 24th 2009, which is near enough to exactly a year ago for this to be a good opportunity for a year in review sort of thing. So please excuse some naval gazing!
It would not be overstating the case to say that this last year in RL has been horrendous. And eljay has been such a wonderful escape and refuge and joy. And you guys? You guys are amazing.
A little over a year ago, I was perusing the prompt list for 2009's hd_smoochfest, looking at the kind of things other people were prompting, in preparation for submitting my own prompt. I was happily evolving from a lurker to a compulsive commenter and prompter, and had no intention of changing that. And then a prompt leapt off the screen, and shouted WRITE ME! So, I did. And I had a blast. And I've not stopped since!
That fic was facta furiosum. I look back at this with an indulgent headshake. Having never ever written fanfic before, I volunteered for a fest... Insanity with a touch of arrogance, I think! But, thankfully, with a LOT of help (nudges alaana_fair), I turned out something that I really like!
Then, I volunteed to pinchhit for that fest. And wrote a very silly fic about body lotion. And gave it a very silly name inspired by an INXS song.... Moisturise Me. I merrily submitted these two fics and impatiently waited for the fest to begin!
When I got too impatient waiting for smoochfest to start, I went searching for prompts and was inspired by a slythindor100 challenge. So I wrote and posted another fic ( Home). I was so nervous... I must have reread the posting guidelines for slythindor100 a billion times, and then messaged the mod to double check! And sassy_cissa was so lovely and encouraging that I pressed the post button! And people commented! And liked it! I did a little happy dance of joy every time my email pinged with a comment! And then tophatdance whose fics in the CSI Nick/Greg fandom I LOVE commented, and we discovered we have ships in common! And I had another eljay friend! And I got recced in the hd_prophet, at which point I nearly fainted from the excitement of it all.
Then I got the bug! awdt gave me more prompts! I wrote another fic in which Draco has an excellent vocabulary and impeccable manners. Yeah, I have no clue where that came from either... Afflatus. And then another extraordinarily silly fic, Doing Sex. And people commented! People whose writing I love! And I made more friends!
Then I had my first eljay birthday. And I got pics from alaana_fair and faithwood and a fic from enchanted_jae and was just blown away by how freaking awesome and welcoming everyone in this fandom is!
By the time hd_smoochfest started posting, RL had got shitter and shitter and I was in hospital with no interweb. But as soon as my fics posted, my RL friend who knew about fandom would phone me and read out the comments, which was lovely.
I kept writing for prompts and commenting and having fun on eljay. And then it was hd_career_fair and I had a blast writing Punch Lines, which combined my two favourite things - BBC radio comedy and h/d! And because I missed out on the fest experience during smoochfest, I invented a sport called Extreme Reading to maximise my career_fair fun. I was fully expecting this to be me entertaining myself. I never ever expected to meet so many awesome friends during the course of it! But I did, which was AWESOME!
Another awesome thing? The hp_uk_meetup! I got to meet people in the flesh! And they were just as awesome as they were on the internet! HI friends from the meetup!
Around that time, I also volunteered to be one of the editors at the hd_prophet. Which is SO much fun and means I read really great fics and get to tell everyone else about them too!
Also around that time I started wondering if I could write a srs fic. hp_mhealthfest gave me that opportunity, and I wrote Shuffling Out Of Hell, a surprisingly undepressing fic about depression. And the whole process of writing that story made me fall even more in love with writing and with this fandom.
hd_holidays rolled round and I was thrilled to be part of a fest I'd devoured as a lurker! And I wrote my first epilogue compliant fic! The Question Of Q. And winnett wrote me the darlingest gift fic ever - Finding Fritz!
I got to make even more new friends modding at alaana_fair's genius game comm, hp_game_night and accio_hd_fics. YAY!
harrypotterbang arrived, and I had my first experience of working alongside an artist, something I loved! And I adore the illustrations citrus_lime did for Sink Or Swim!
I loved that so much, I signed up for hp_art_tales and got to work with my birthday twin, stellamoon. Which was A.W.E.S.O.M.E. The end result is It Was That Day, easily my angstiest fic yet. But Stella and I also got to make explicit the happy ending that particular art is pointing towards!
Also - see that piece of ring composition there? My post started with Stella and has come right back to her! Good, no?!
That pretty much ends my year in review - I went from lurking to someone who has written 16 fics! Some of which have plots! And I went from not talking to anyone to having the bestest flist evah... And because I think you are awesome, I promise not to naval gaze in such a rambly fashion for another year...!
