He looked up. Brilliant. Just as he thought it was going so well...
“Ron. Don’t call him that. He’s sitting here because I invited him.” Ron’s face had gone an angry red colour and Hermione stood next to him looking embarrassed.
“Harry! It’s Malfoy. Why did you invite him?” Draco helped himself to a fairy cake and picked off the Christmas tree icing. He was determined not to look at Ron or say anything that would make Harry realise that this... this whatever... was a bad idea.
Harry sighed, and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Just sit down and have some lunch, Ron.”
“I’m not sitting next to him.” Draco didn’t need to look up to imagine the mulish look on his face.
“Fine. Don’t. But Draco is my friend and I invited him to sit here so don’t make a scene.” Draco’s hand paused on its way to his mouth. Friend. Right. Well, that answered that question. He dropped the half eaten fairy cake on his plate.
As gracefully as he could manage, he swung his legs out from the bench and stood up. “Thanks for letting me sit here, Potter.” He nodded to Neville and Dean, who were both watching the scene between Harry and Ron unfold, and walked out of the door, hoping he didn’t look like he was running away with his heart aching.
“Draco! Wait!” Draco didn’t look behind him, but carried on walking. When he got out of the Great Hall, and realised Harry hadn’t followed him, he broke into a run down to the dungeons.

Draco was showered and dressed in dry clothes and back in his table in the library, protected from the outside by the wall of books. Not that he’d got any work done - he’d spent the afternoon in a haze of self-hatred. How could he have been so stupid to think this stupid Advent Adventures thing was an opportunity to start afresh? He’d revealed so much of himself - his stupid flirty presents and letters as Harry’s anonymous Christmas Elf, and as himself with the talking and the kissing - and for what? Humiliation and to be once again discarded in favour of Weasley. How could he have been so stupid?
“Draco.” Blaise’s voice broke the cycle of his thoughts. He looked up. “Everyone’s in the common room. There’s egg nog.”
He shook his head. “I’m fine, thanks. Busy.”
Blaise pulled up a seat. “It’s Saturday night. You can’t spend it in the library.”
“Yeah, I can. And I will.” He ignored Blaise’s hand on his shoulder and kept staring at his open book until he heard Blaise walk away.
