I want your love and I want your revenge

Ok! I, industrial/electronic/rock/classic rock music fan, am officially stepping out of the closet.

I fucking love Lady Gaga.

It wasn't always like this. Just hear me out.

I first became aware of her via Go Fug Yourself. She was wearing a hair extension shaped into a bow, lacked pants, and was billed as an heiress-DJ. I therefore thought she was a Paris Hilton-esque twat.

I heard about the nubbin, I saw the Rolling Stone bubbles cover, and I thought, well, at least this bitch knows how to stay in the spotlight. Then I finally actually heard one of her songs.

Three days later, I STILL couldn't get the chorus of Poker Face out of my head. So I watched the video. It was kinda Bowie-esque, but also kinda Xtina. I was still not sold.

But then I watched the VMA performance of the (then) new single Paparazzi. I saw that girl pound the piano and my heart melted. By the finale I was putty in her hands.

The official video for Paparazzi is pretty fucking good too. It features Alexander Skarsgard, which, um, yes.

I also appreciate the Russian mob boss with the gold gladiator jawpiece in Bad Romance.

From far away, is nice.

From close up, is also nice.

What drove me to write this post was Bad Romance. I. Cannot. Stop. Listening. To. It. The woman crafts solid gold earworms. Earworms I tell you! The video is full of Alexander McQueen outfits and set in a futuristic Russian bath house. And frankly, it owns.

Unfortunately I can only link to it, because I don't understand where the code is hiding in this new YouTube Vevo thing. I want your ugly, I want your disease.

More than anything I'm excited about a pop star that doesn't have to sell a fake virginity to sell singles. Instead she's playing with gender, sexual orientation, and fashion, all while demonstrating a keen awareness of the bullshit machine she's thrown herself into. She's got an 80's pop sensibility with a 90's bondage creep factor. And she's not afraid to look ugly, which is kind of amazing in this Post-MTV era. If you listen to the music itself, you'll hear lots of minor notes lurking under the 4x4 beats. Her lyrics are not super deep, but they are simple and catchy. The combination reminds me, for some reason, of early-to-mid-era Marilyn Manson. Frankly, I don't see why they shouldn't spin her shit at Tranz.

But hey!- There's a really good interview at the LA Times that gets deeper into this stuff than I can -"I want women -- and men -- to feel empowered by a deeper and more psychotic part of themselves. The part they're always trying desperately to hide. I want that to become something that they cherish."

Also, this makes me laugh every time I look at it. Poor Eminem. Remember when you where the one freaking people out?

/love!
