So I started playing FFXII yesterday, and about five minutes into it, I remembered why I hate Final Fantasy games--the battle systems SUCK.
I understand turn-based fighting. It's not my favourite thing, but I understand it and the reasoning behind it and I can deal. I also understand not being able to spam a target with the same move and having to use different ones instead while you recover from an awesome attack ("cool-down time", as MMOs tend to call it). What I DON'T understand is this time-based crap. Which basically equates to...select target, select 'attack'...and wait 15 seconds while the target mauls you and your attack bar fills up, then you hit it. Once. Then it's mauling you again while you wait for ANOTHER 15 seconds...yeah. Yeah, really not so cool, Squeenix. :| How is that supposed to be fun, huh? There's no SKILL involved, either. It basically just comes down to your level and how much HP you've got.
I don't even want to IMAGINE fighting bosses with this sort of system. I'm not far enough into the game to really worry about that yet, but I guess I'll just have to fall back on old habits and grind for forever so I can tear through the bosses like rice paper (which annoys my brother when he watches me play, but WTFever). Give me the good ol' button-mashing hack-and-slash system where you just hit the button and it lets you swing your sword. |D
...I guess I'm also not far enough into the game to really decide if I like it or not...it's pretty, but that's sorta par for the course when it comes to FF games and Squeenix in general. I do like the "monster hunting" sidequest premise, but the battle system being retarded really frustrates me. ...Anyway, I'll hurry through it, and then you can borrow it if you like, Anne. Maybe you'll see some thread of reason in this battle system that I am somehow missing. :|
