"Myths Over Miami"

Jun 19, 2007 18:40

This article is pretty old (from 1997), but it's really fascinating. It's about how homeless children in Miami have developed their own complicated mythology.

I was particularly struck by this part:And in the Eighties, folklorists noted references to an evil Bloody Mary -- or La Llorona, as children of Mexican migrant workers first named her -- among children of all races and economic classes.
I had completely forgotten about it until now, but I remember hearing about Bloody Mary, an evil ghost whom you could conjure from a mirror, when I was a kid, too. I didn't realize it was part of some huge 80s folklore phenomenon. Did y'all hear about her as a kid too?
