Quit While You're Ahead

HIKARU NO GO CROSSOVER FANFICTION

"So, how have you and Yukina-chan been doing?" Green eyes sparkled as the young man flipped an errant red lock of hair and dropped a stone carelessly on the point in goban. He did not look over a day over twenty and it had been over sixty years since he and Kuwabara had been Spirit World Detectives together in the Urameshi team.

Kuwabara knew better than to discount the action despite how contrived it looked. He set about to counter it.

"We're doing fine...but you've not visited us lately." It had been more than five years since Kurama last had come into the Human World from the Demon World where he resided since his "death" over forty years ago.

"Aa. I've been busy. Here and there."

There didn't seem to be a shape forming but that was usual for Kurama this early in the game.

Kind of like the punk...speaking of Shindou...

"Do you know that you're grandson plays Go? I've knocked him down to size a time or two." Kuwabara fairly cackled at the last since it was the only thing he could do. He knew better than to try any of his tricks with the kitsune. Any trick he would have tried to distract this opponent would probably be deflected and an even greater trick played on him after the game and when he least expected it.

"Which grandson?"

"Shindou Hikaru. He has some spirit sense too."

"Ah."

For a while, the only sound to be heard was the clacking of stones being placed on the board. The shape of the go stones still refused to make sense.

"You seemed distracted today, kitsune." Kuwabara learned he could get away with some things now that he was old and wrinkly. Kurama grew more tolerant of him as the years went on.

"It's just that you and Yukina-chan might be seeing me more often."

Kurama put down a stone to parry Kuwabara's latest attack but the shape was not going to hold out at the end game and both of them knew it.

"Why is that?"

"Someone interests me. You know the thief that's been in the news lately?"

"Oh, and why would a human thief--no matter how famous--interest you?"

"Some informants of mine says he's good, very very good."

"Oh?" Kuwabara felt the prickle of curiosity taking over his mind despite telling himself that it was probably a distraction from whatever Kurama was planning on the goban.

"Yes, and my research indicates he might be the one I've been searching for all this time. So I'm going to stay on this side of the kekkai for a while."

Kurama's last move was definitely interesting. Even if Kuwabara was fairly certain that there was no way the kitsune could win this game, it was worth the time to look at the goban again just in case he missed something.

He always finds a way to make me lose my concentration...

Kurama was not an expert Go player by any measure but he always found a way to derail Kuwabara's plans.

I would pay good money for Shindou to play him...and he says I'm a wicked old man... Tricky, tricky fox...

"So do you have a false identity lined up?" Kuwabara suddenly had a very evil thought as he defended his main group of stones.

"Not quite yet, but I will have papers by the end of the month."

"How about being my long lost grandson? You can be a Go pro and never have to go through school system again." Kurama might have attended school and aced his tests but with the perspective of years, Kuwabara could easily see now that the intelligent kitsune must have been bored out of his skull.

"But I need to enroll in a high school, that is where he is."

"Well, at least not go through University again, then."

"If you're certain..." Kurama's eyes danced over the goban.

"I am."

"I resign, and I'll see you at the end of the month."

"Thank you for the game."

"No, thank you for the game." Kurama winked as he got up to leave.

Kuwabara counted the stones, cackling smugly.

What the...?

It was a tie. He ran all the possible moves through his mind and knew...

"Shindou-kun is the one with the blond bangs and the 'Five' T-shirts, right?" Kurama asked as he went out the door and slid it behind him.

"Kuramaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

-The End-

Author's Notes: Just a play on the surname of two characters in two different series. Un-betaed and unapologetically crack!
