Children are the Future....

Unless we stop them now.

Seriously, I am concerned that my children will do to me what I did to my parents. That is, isolate them from the current state of the art. My parents never figured out how to make the "12:00" stop blinking on their VCR. Their digital clocks were always wrong. If the cable went out, I would need to come over to fix it. Their cell phones always had voicemail full of old messages that they never got.

Fortunately, our generation has been bent on cutting edge technology all out lives. When did the video game wars start? late 70's? early 80's? We might have not fully understood the difference between an 8bit and 16bit system, but we were young enough that we could learn. Powers of 2 came naturally, thanks to our new personal computers. At least new technology won't be completely alien to us, as we were the original 'early adopters'.

Then there is the more worrisome issue, Popular culture and diction. When I interact with younger kids, ages 14 - 18, I am often times befuddled by their likes and dislikes, or more frightening, their choice of words and speech patterns. It took me 5 or 6 months to discover that 'pwned' was an INTENTIONAL misspelling of 'owned'. Sure, I can't complain too much, when I was 15, I was using pager code to communicate. "177337-1773-87-13011171176" (geek points to first person to decode)

I guess I'm just annoyed with the current batch of teenagers, and I just hope that my children won't be as annoying.
