tiny rant

ok, so last night I had some work scheduled for the grave shift guys, one step was to logon to one of the new machines and test a connection. Well, they called me at 1am this morning, because they don't get to that machine. I was upset because it wasn't an important step, and they knew that, but still called me. However, when I got in this morning, I got more mad when I found out that said machine was indeed accessible, but the guy executing the work didn't follow the directions I gave for him. I explicitly called the machine by FQDN (Fully qualified domain name) and they typed in just the hostname, well, that new domain isn't in the search path of the bastion hosts, so they assumed it was down.

What's the point of providing detailed step by step directions if the details are going to be overlooked?
