First post of the new year (it only took me like three weeks to do it. Better late than never, right?).
Sorry I've been so MIA, but I can explain. I started the new school semester n the 5th and it's been hectic trying to get back into the swing of things. Then this past weekend I had some friends from home come up to visit for the weekend and to celebrate my BFF Kevin's 21st birthday, which was way too much fun. We had a long 3 day weekend this weekend thanks to Martin Luther King Jr., so for the last three or so days my roommates and I have had about ten people staying in our four bedroom apartment. It was like a giant sleepover straight out of the "ideal" childhood, complete with staying up until sunrise and playing lots of games (we must have played at least 30 hours of Mario Kart for the Wii this weekend, no lie). Well, except there was a lot of beer and liquor and Taco Bell involved (ohhh college life).
Also, I've had a lot on my plate to deal with this month. As I'm sure you've heard by now, Haiti was hit with a last week with a
7.0 magnitude earthquake, which devastated Port-au-Prince - where my dad's sister and her children live, which is why I haven't been all that emotionally available these days. My mom has family who live in the northern part of Haiti (Cap Haitien), and they weren't as effected by the quake (although there has been a lot of looting and robbery and theft going around in all the chaos). We hadn't heard from my dad's family - that is, until Sunday. Everyone (thank God) is more or less okay. My parents are doing everything they can to fly my family here to the states, but there's a lot of red tape to go through, since the majority of Port-au-Prince - Haiti's capital - has been destroyed and it is virtually impossible to even begin the visa process. My aunt and cousins currently have no house, so they've been staying a shelter that's been looted at gunpoint five times in the last three days. But they're ok, and the rescue workers have been doing all they can to help, and that's all we can really ask for at this point.
And just for pop culture's sake...
So I'm going to start off with the Golden Globes. First, I'd like to stab everyone who's complaining about Avatar (rightfully) winning basically every single award. I treat movies like I treat politics. When I don't know much about a certain political issue, I won't have much of an opinion about it and avoid getting into arguments since I can't defend my point. But if I'm presented with an issue I've written papers about/done research on, you better bet your bottom dollar I'll defend my point if someone starts talking smack.
Same goes for movies. If I've seen a movie, I'll tell you why I hated/loved it.
What I don't get is why there are all these jerks who are bitching and moaning that Avatar won, solely on the basis that it's "Sci-Fi." Watch the goddamn movie and then tell me what you think. Until then, shut the fuck up please. Thank you.
...now that I got THAT out of my system:
Yayyyy! I'm SO glad Glee won, you have no idea. This was probably my favorite part of the Golden Globes, lol.
Actually, I lied. This was my favorite part of the Golden Globes:
I CANNOT BELIEVE THE HANGOVER WON. I am absolutely ecstatic. Unlike most comedies these days, The Hangover is actually hilarious AND extremely quotable. You walk out of the theater with at least five funny quotes memorized. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that I enjoy quoting so much. You sit around your house, thinking about the movie, and find yourself chuckling to yourself like a crazy because it's THAT funny. Plus, Bradley Cooper AND Ed Helms (and Asian from the TV show Community)? AMAZING.

So Sarah Palin (aka the reason John McCain lost the 2008 presidential election, doncha know *rolls eyes*) is going to be a news anchor on Fox News. For those of you who aren't familiar with political news stations in the U.S., Fox News is the right leaning, conservative station. This makes me happy in ways I cannot explain. Finally, a place on TV where I will never have to watch her. I tend to watch CNN and MSNBC (the more leftward leaning channels) because I think that a lot of the people on Fox are douche bags, but that is neither here nor there. I found this cartoon and basically laughed my ass off. I dunno, I definitely got a kick out of it (hey, it's my major to care about politics and read newspapers for things like this) and thought maybe you guys would too?
Anyway. It's 4:35AM, so I should probably head to bed since I have class in about nine hours. Goodnight, LJ world! And I promise to update a bit more frequently and not let a whole millennium pass by before I post again.
