He has so much to learn.
Yes, he's saved the Earth, stopped a time-travelling, half-crazed Romulan and lived to tell the tale. With his rag-tag team, he's even managed to tape and glue the Enterprise back together so they can return home. Together, they've schemed, tricked and improv'd their way through a potentially devastating situation and they've won.
He still has so much to learn.
He needs tact, diplomacy, digression and, most notably, the knowledge of when to say die. Pike looks over at Kirk, out cold after nearly three days of activity, and he knows the kid isn't ready for a command; he's hot-headed, impulsive and idealistic. A captain needs to be cool, thoughtful and realistic; a captain needs to plan. And a good captain realizes that sometimes, a situation cannot be won. A good captain knows, sometimes, men get left behind.
"How do you feel?" Doctor McCoy looks ready to join Kirk. He reviews the scanner over Pike's bed with blurry eyes.
"Not sure," he answers honestly, his eyes still fixed on Jim, his responsibility, his recruit. Jim shifts in his sleep, his lips twitching into the faintest smirk. "I'll let you know when I figure it out."
