“Was that Constable Campbell?”
“Yes, Doctor Watson, he has gone to see Mister Holmes. Why don’t you take a seat here while Caleb strips the bed?”
“Doctor Shoburn, I don’t know how to make-”
“I want to speak to the constable about what he intends on doing. And if I may, I should like to look in at Holmes. Not to say I do not trust your skills, I just…”
“Prefer to watch over your friend. I completely understand, of course, but you’ve had a long night and it is time to sit down.”
“I assure you, I’m fine. I…”
“Swooned again, has he?”
“Yes, I thought I told you to keep him quiet and still.”
“I tried! The man refused to do so. The moment his eyes opened, he insisted that he had to check on Mister Holmes and then hunt down the killers and bring the case to a successful end. When I told him he ought to sit, it only agitated him further, and when I attempted to point out his injury, he said there was nothing there, only a scratch!”
“Mister Holmes mentioned that some sort of hypnotism had been implemented. It is obvious this man has also been drugged though the exact type of drug is difficult to pinpoint without a sample. Mister Holmes suggested a compound containing opium and barbituric acid; with the addition of his injury, most of his symptoms fit.”
“I don’t know enough about medication to debate it.”
“Or of bed making, obviously. Stop what you’re doing and help me with him. He’s torn the stitches.”
“I did try to keep him still…”
“I do not blame you. Forcing him down would’ve further exacerbated his condition and a delusional man under the influence of an unknown chemical is not to be trifled with.”
“Perhaps giving him something to help him sleep would help?”
“I fear what reaction it might have with whatever else is in his system.”
“Then what are our options? Even if he thinks otherwise, he cannot continue the frenzied pacing and worrying without suffering consequences.”
“I am well aware of that, Mister Coleson. Hold this. I want to bind his arm to see if that will reduce the strain on the wound. Ah, Doctor, back with us?”
“I… yes, though I cannot recall sitting down.”
“Unsurprising. If I may be blunt with you, sir?”
“Of course, Doctor Shoburn. Is something wrong with Holmes?”
“Your friend is fine. What I have to address deals with your condition; and to be perfectly honest, Doctor Watson, if you do not give yourself a moment’s rest, you could very well collapse.”
“I told you, the cut-”
“Is nothing. Yes, I realize that. I am more concerned that you’ve been without food, without sleep and without water for more than half a day. See reason. Lie down for a few hours. Take some liquids. I assure you Mister Holmes is in good hands until then.”
“The case…”
“Can wait until later.”
