“There's no such thing as fun for the whole family.” - Jerry Seinfeld
"-don't care! I'm not living with Mama and Papa the rest of my life, Lani," Evie was saying.
Lani sighed, rubbing her eyes. "I'm just suggesting you give it some more time."
"What can it hurt, Evie?" Bailey piped in. "You're working now and saving money-"
"Oh really? Bailey, do you want to live with Mama and Papa? No. You're living with Akelah."
"Hey!" Akelah said. "Don't put me in this. You moved out."
"Shut up!" Kala finally shouted. Lani jumped beside her and looked her over. Kala sighed. "Guys, I didn't plan this conference call so you could argue."
"And here I thought it was another intervention," Evie muttered dryly.
"Forget it, then. I'm hanging up," Kala said.
"No she's not!" Lani placed her hand over the speakerphone.
"Okay, ssh. Everyone quiet," Bailey told the others. She and Akelah were on their phone, while Evie was on the phone at their parents house. Long distance three-way calling.
"We've set the date," Kala said. "September fifth. And it's going to be in Kane'ohe. I already talked to Papa about it."
"Why on earth would you want to get married here?" Evie asked.
"Because it's home. Because...all of my family and friends are there. Because it's what I want. And Ben loves the idea. His family is on the West coast and can easily fly down. There are less people in New York to attend than the other way around. It makes sense."
"Want me to hold some rooms at the hotel?" Akelah asked.
"Oh! That'd be awesome," Kala nodded. She hadn't even thought about that. "Would you need..like..credit card information now?"
"Psh. You're my sister, my soon to be brother in law is rich. I know you're good for it. How many people do you think will need rooms?"
"Sheldon and I might camp out at Avery's," Lani said. "Well, once I ask him if he wants to come."
"Oh he better. I want to meet him," Evie popped back into the conversation. "Bailey says he's hot."
"Well so is the lawyer she was running around the city with," Lani smirked.
"What?" Evie and Akelah gasped at once. Kala could just see Bailey's hands over her face.
"There was a hot lawyer? And you didn't tell us?" Akelah asked.
"Mmhmm," Lani said. "Colin. I've worked with him before, he's-"
"This is about Kala's wedding, isn't it?" Bailey directed the phone call back.
"It is," Kala nodded. "Keke, hold on to...I don't know, five rooms for now. I'll talk around and get a better estimate, but that should cover us, his parents, and his sister. And I think my friend Jack is coming in from California."
"Okay. Five it is."
"Have you thought about where you want the wedding to be?" Evie asked.
"We haven't talked about that yet. I don't know if he wants a church or what, but he did mention the beach."
"Ew," Bailey said. "Sand everywhere. Don't people get that it ruins the picture perfect wedding?"
Kala laughed. "Well that's why I was thinking about that restaurant and bar over in Honolulu. Remember we went there a few times? It has that huge patio that extends over the dunes. I mean...it's big enough to set out several rows of chairs and we can get the scenery of the beach without the sand. And that area of the beach is pretty empty."
"Ohh," Lani gasped. "That'd be perfect! Can one of you call them?" She directed at her sisters back home.
"On it," Evie said with a nod. "Just want me to ask how much it would cost to have a wedding there?"
"Yes," Kala said. "And obviously the reception will be at the resturant. It isn't too far of a drive and it'll be a lot cheaper."
"Sounds good," Akelah said. "Are you going to make us wear pink? Please don't make us wear pink. It's not really my color."
Kala bit her lip. "There will be no pink, don't worry. Though I will have to consider something that works for all of you."
"Well considering we all look alike," Evie began with a smirk in her tone.
"I know," Kala sighed. "We'll figure it out. Which...comes to my next topic."
"Maid of honor," Akelah said.
"Yeah...look, I'm going to be fair about this. I love you all the same, but...I'm going to ask Lani-" Lani beamed and silently bounced at Kala's side. Kala gave her a look. "It's just that she's going to be here looking at dresses and plans with me and.."
"She can have it," Evie said. "You know me, I hate responsibility."
"Eh," Akelah said. "No feelings hurt here. I don't want to dance with the best man anyway."
Kala waited for Bailey to say something, but the line had become silent. "B?" She asked carefully.
"Hm? No, no it's fine. Really. The...the wedding talk, it's..."
"I know," Kala said softly. "I'm sorry. I'm not trying to rub it in or-"
"I know, honey. It's okay. Oh. Not that you've done invitations yet, but I'd love everyone here to meet Miranda."
"Sure, she seemed real nice," Kala nodded. "We'll invite her."
"Good," Bailey nodded.
"Anything else?" Evie asked.
"Not at the moment I don't think..." Kala thought everything over.
"Bachlorette party?" Akelah grinned.
Kala groaned. "Keep it tame."
"Hey, Lani's the one planning it. She's maid of honor."
"Yeah," Lani said. "I'll need some help with that since I'm not in town."
"I'm your man," Akelah said. "We'll make it a blast. Who do you want there, Kala? It'd be kinda dull with just the five of us."
"Gee thanks," Evie said.
"Shut up," Akelah shot back.
"I don't know," Kala said. "Us, obviously. Dixie and Alena. Nina. Miranda's invited if she's around."
"Okay," Akelah said.
"There will be cake, right?" Evie asked.
"Yes, there will be cake," Kala assured her.
