I went back through my posts for 2008 (which took FORever, I sure gab a lot!) and came up with this summary:
Year Recap
Movies seen:
non-child films: P.S. I Love You (*sniffle, twas lovely), Iron Man (ROCKIN good), Wanted (meh), Indiana Jones + Crystal Skull (wanted to love it, it was ok), Incredible Hulk (good), Quantum of Solace (s'ok), Day the Earth Stood Still (fairly good)
child-safe: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything (keen!), Nim's Island (fair), Madagascar 2 (cool), Horton Hears a Who (cute), Bolt (yay for be-awesome sidekicks!), Kung Fu Panda (Jack Black was the perfect Po), WallE (lurved!), Igor (meh)
News Stories that still interest me: Algae as an energy source, and Barack Obama's preparation for the transition.
News Stories I'm relieved are done: all pre-election political crap
Geek Gadgets I liked: Triple Nine Clock of 9s (which I don't have but covet); iPod - mucho tunage - now to get a working computer with decent drive space!); "Tilt" phone - still love love love it; Garmin Nuvi - lovely side effects - less stress about going to new places and my daughter has learned tons about map reading
People needing prayers/good wishes:
Jobs: Michael, Judy, J's husband
Health: Lori, Judy, Icubud
Things I'm Happy About:
Watching my lovely daughter grow and mature (and simulataneously get more silly)
The Wedding and starting our new family - I loved having all the family with us in Gatlinburg.
The house purging/organizing of the first few months
Meeting AuntConi and Rick for lunch as they passed through
Taking Katie to Dallas to meet her future brothers
Getting a mattress I actually sleep well on
Craig Ferguson is a brilliant host and held my attention (and affection!) for yet another year.
Katie's birthday food drive - such a sweetie - and how brave she was crossing the log bridge
Getting over to see Aunt Betty this summer before she passed away. She loved Michael - see, she had great taste :)
Welcoming our beloved Donovan to the family!
Things that drove me crazy:
The house cluttering back up in the past few months
The house furnace breaking off and on for 5 weeks in the coldest weather
The fridge/freezer breaking and needing repair - then the dishwasher - followed by the clothes washer.
Hurricane Ike (3 day power outage - lost $400 of food, roof demo'd)
The Tongue Saga - lump / surgery / surgery recovery
13" of snow that hung on for several days
The millions of steps you have to take to get your name changed
Layoffs and constant stress at work for over a year (which now continues with the Chapter 11 threat looming)
The stock market tanking and the ripple effect from that.
Things I learned something about:
Boundaries really are ok
Caring for my inner child is good.
Having a partner - an involved partner who shoulders some of the load - is bliss. Especially when we have so many good times together.
Hypervigilence is a side-effect of previous experience - it's not a necessity for survival TODAY.
If I give my friends the chance, they can be wonderfully generous.
I can examine past traumas from a distance and review it, not relive it, and come through the better for having done so.
About 20% of the the population is also highly-sensitive. The HSP book has been a great resource for ideas how to work WITH it, not against
The blessings far exceed the challenges - may that continue for years to come!
and for the record: 2007's Christmas Tree came down on Jan. 21, 2008
Wonder when this year's tree will be taken down ;)
