Sarah Palin
Honestly, I don't give a good god damn about how many kids she has, or what their special needs are (though I'm curious to know exactly HOW she plans on being an advocate for special needs kids...she hasn't clarified). I don't care if her daughter got knocked up and is being forced into a sham of a marriage because she's going to have a baby. I don't care that Sarah Palin has ambitions beyond wife and mother, it's something I actually applaud her for. I don't care that she has issues in her own private life that are none of my damned business.
The things I do care about regarding Palin are the fact that she is a right wing nutjob. She is pro-life, even in the case of rape or incest. Even if her daughter were raped, she has said she wouldn't allow an abortion. She does not think it's important to uphold Roe v Wade and she does not care if you want your own say in what goes on with your own uterus.
She wants to drill in ANWR, which is just crazy. Even if one could avoid a devastating environmental impact, the benefits of drilling there are minimal at best and would take YEARS to make even the smallest impact.
She has said that it's OKAY to deny benefits to same sex couples to "preserve the traditional family". WTF does that even mean? One of her three biggest aspirations upon running for governor was to deny gay people their civil rights. HER TOP THREE! I'm positive that my family will not fall apart just because another human being receives their full and complete civil rights. But what do I know? I'm not a bigot.
She refuses to acknowledge that her anti Native policies are actually anti-Native. She prefers the term "anti-rural" which is just a bunch of bullshit. She opposes tribal sovereignty, subsistance fishing and hunting, and Native languages.
Her record on the environment is appalling, opposing salmon protection, lobbying to get Beluga whales and polar bears off the endangered species list, and does not support environmental monitoring of cruise ships in Alaska's waters. I've mentioned before that she supports drilling in ANWR. These are just a few examples of her bassackwards environmental policy.
She has declared an Alaska Day of Prayer, an Alaska Christian Heritage Week and an Alaska Bible Week as governor. Seriously? Seriously.
So again, I don't care about her family life. Or the fact that she is a wife and mother. That's probably one of the very few things that I can say I don't have a problem with regarding Sarah Palin. On issues of policy and even plain old common sense however, this woman should not be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office.
I used to have an ounce of respect for John McCain. Until he started playing dirty and condescending to American women with this VP choice. It's pandering, plain and simple and I seriously hope that most women are smart enough to see through it. If McCain were truly a maverick like he claims, he could have picked a woman with the experience, integrity and intelligence to serve in this office. Olympia Snow or Kathleen Sebelius. Women who I don't always agree with, but aren't ridiculous parodies of the Christian Right. Instead, he chose a puppet with the sole purpose of appealing to the lowest common denominator and it's a fucking insult to women everywhere.
