dumb ideas

Scud eyes the empty hallway, and pads down it silently. He pauses right before the livingroom, listening for the sounds of people moving and breathing inside, or further on in the kitchen. When he figures that anybody in there must be fucking mental to stand stock still so long, he slips in and past the couch (in slight disarray, as usual). His ( Read more... )

Jason sneaks up on Scud, or tries to. Sneaking up on Scud is like trying to sneak up on Gabe or one of the Zanes, damn near impossible.

Nonetheless, he tries, walking silently and then leaning against Scud. "What are you doing?"

"Makin' a call, maybe..." Since he doesn't startle, presumably he did hear Jason at some point. Then again, he does sound a little testy.

"Oh." Shrugging, he gives Scud an apologetic grins. "I'll leave you to your call then."

Hooking a finger into a beltloop on Jason's jeans to prevent him from leaving for a moment, Scud leans in quickly and nuzzles beneath his ear before releasing him. "Thanks." He says roughly.

He laughs and nods toward the bedroom. "You can call in there, I promise not to listen in."

Scud gives him a small smile and heads inside.

Jason sneaks in after him and shuts the door. He grabs a book off the shelf and curls up on the bed, studiously ignoring Scud while he makes his call.

Sitting on the floor after dialing, Scud listens to the uninterrupted rings. Maybe they did finally move. Then the machine kicks in: "This is the Daw residence. Stephen, Isabelle, and Katie are out, so leave us a message." For a second he feels, absurdly, left out. But that was his doing, and what would it sound like on there anyway? Awkward. Either two Stephens, or the name his dad hated, Scud ...

The beep interrupts his thoughts. "Uh. Hey. It's me." His voice is hesitant. "Stephen." He clarifies before pausing uncertainly. "I don't need money or anythin' like that and I'm not in trouble, all right, I just -- thought I should call or somethin'. Sorry I haven't earlier, I -- I've been ... been in Russia, been all over the damn country. I'm ... uh, I'm workin' for this guy, Gabe, fix the cars an' stuff." He's turning red and looks to see if Jason's paying any attention. "Anyway, if you wanna call back and yell my ear off or whatever, this is my number ..."

Jason learned a long time ago how to completely ignore the rest of the room and tunes out Scud, so he doesn't really hear the conversation.

If he had been listening, he probably would have been grinning right now.

Hanging up, Scud sighs and climbs up beside Jason to stretch out, and sticks the phone on the nightstand.

Jason tosses the book on the floor and rolls over, curling up with Scud. "Was that a good sigh or a bad sigh?"

"Impatient sigh," he answers, putting his mouth on Jason's shoulder. "Got the machine, now I gotta wait."

"That sucks, waiting. Because the longer it takes, the more anxious you get." He cuddles closer to Scud, biting his lip. "Did you see the bonfire out front?"

"Hmm? No. What's the occasion?" They're a little too close quarters for this to really work but Scud is eyeing Jason to the best of his ability. It was the lip-biting that did it.

Jason ducks his head, playing with Scud's shirt. "Gabe brought home this shiny Porsche, and well... he let Sin go at it with a sledgehammer and a bat. Then she turned it into a burning pile of rubble."

"Oh," Scud says in the sad I know there was a reason for that but it's still a little stabby voice he reserves for these special car-related occasions.
