Sungmin is Hyukjae's best friend.
It's indisputable even if, at times, Donghae and Junsu like to steal that spot. But Sungmin's been there since the beginning; been with him from when they were hopeful trainees and had shed sweat and blood for a chance of fame.
Sungmin's been there forever, holding his hand tight when he felt the tell tale prick behind his eyes that dictated a solid cry.
"It'll be okay," Sungmin would whisper, soothing hands and warm hugs, and Hyukjae knows he's in love with his best friend.
But, because Sungmin is his best friend, he knows things.
He knows that Sungmin dislikes the colour purple and hates having his fringe in his eyes when he's working. He knows that Sungmin knows all the songs to The Lion King off by heart (and by default, Hyukjae does too because Sungmin always hums them when he's nervous.) He knows that Sungmin has the biggest sweet tooth he's ever met but always tries to restrain himself, and that Sungmin hates the smell of cigarette smoke.
Hyukjae knows Sungmin, and he also knows that Sungmin doesn't love him in that way as much as he wishes it, so he's content with "best friend hugs" and "best friend ruffles."
Because Sungmin is Hyukjae's best friend and Hyukjae is Sungmin's, and he wouldn't change that for the world.
