"This blows," Sungmin says as he toasts bread after bread. "I thought you had a plan."
"I had a plan," Heechul says. "To get in, become invisible and paper-thin, sneak into the safe, steal the crystal and get the fuck out. I liked that plan."
It's enough to make Sungmin laugh and forgive him as he brings over the toast, a house made of crisp bread. He always insists on building it like that, because "if you stack it like normal then all the heat makes the bread go soggy and soggy toast is gross."
"So that means we don't have a plan," Luna says as she sits at the dinner table, swinging her legs gaily as she reaches for a slice.
"We had a plan," Heechul clarifies, reaching for the peanut butter. Changmin gets there first and gives him a wide look of innocence when he snarls.
"So we had a plan and now we don't? Okay, I can work with that." Zhou Mi just shrugs when everyone looks at him and smiles around his mouthful of marmalade.
Part of the problem was that they had rented the furnished apartment for only three people and their time was running up. When Heechul had proposed the mission with word of a plan, it was enough to get them packing and out of Busan and back to suburban Seoul because his plans usually worked flawlessly, or failed miserably. Heechul knew no safe middle.
So in an apartment meant for three people, Heechul, Sungmin, Luna, Changmin, Zhou Mi, Youngwoon, Kyuhyun and Onew live, sharing duties and trying to come up with a plan.
Seven days before time runs out and Heechul reaches the end of his tether, Changmin strides into the living room, arms held aloft and stepping over the comatose bodies of Youngwoon and Onew.
"I have a plan. It's okay, no need to build me an altar, your undying gratitude is enough."
"I hope it's better than Heechul's," Sungmin calls form the kitchen, going through another loaf of bread.
"Trust me!" Changmin kicks Youngwoon. "It's not great, but it's better than anything anyone else has thought up."
Luna rolls her eyes as she emerges from her room, helping Onew up as he rubs his eyes.
"Let's hear it." Heechul munches his way through centimetre thick Nutella.
"You will, just not yet." Changmin enters the kitchen, finding Sungmin and Kyuhyun launching crumbs at eat other.
There's a moment of absolute stillness before they turn on him and he grabs the first thing he can, a plastic bag, and they watch it as it flutters to the ground.
"Wait, I need your help."
Sungmin, the kind soul that he is, drops his handful in curiosity, but Kyuhyun launches his before agreeing to listen.
"What's the best way to steal something?" Changmin says as he pulls crumbs from his hair.
"Stealth," Sungmin says immediately as Kyuhyun says, "A distraction."
Changmin raises his eyebrows.
