Sungmin nonchalantly slides a napkin across the table to Hyukjae. He's practised the move thousands of times: smooth, uncaring, eyes distracted and hands definitely, definitely, not trembling.
do you like me? check yes or no.
He watches the TV, grabbing a few gummy snakes so he doesn't snatch the napkin up as soon as Hyukjae's done.
It doesn't matter anyway.
Hyukjae wipes his mouth with it and balls it up before shooting for the bin.
"Score!"
At one of their fansignings, one girl brings out a huge portrait of all fifteen, fifteen, of them with various messages on the border.
Oppa, I'm rooting for you!
Good luck!
All the best, oppa!
I love you oppa ^^
The last one is the one that distracts Sungmin as he takes it gingerly, offering the girl a smile.
"What's your name?" he asks, and she smiles, abashed.
"Um, Hyunjae, thank you Sungmin-oppa!"
He signs the CD and then the poster, a small thank you for supporting us and good luck! in the corner with his signature. She moves on and another fan takes her place.
"What's your name?" he asks kindly, and she offers it.
Throughout the whole signing, he thinks of that portrait and that one message in so many to someone who'll probably never see it, never notice it. He smiles wryly before beckoning the next girl forward.
"What's your name?"
"I'm exhausted," Hyukjae whines as he collapses on the couch, cradling his hand.
Sungmin knocks his head as he walks past. "Go shower, don't stink up the apartment."
There's a minute before Hyukjae flips around, staring at Sungmin. They share a look, and Sungmin remembers a word he'd learnt for one of those trivia nights.
Mamihlapinatapais.
He swallows, and Hyukjae sighs heavily before sitting up.
"Yes Mum."
He shuffles off obediently, grabbing clothes from his room before disappearing, and Donghae seats himself down on the couch, munching on a banana and turning on the TV. Sungmin frowns.
"Go to sleep."
Donghae shakes his head as he flicks through the channels efficiently before pausing on some softcore porn, the girl slowly stripping.
"Have some taste," Sungmin says as he rolls his eyes and changes the channel to the news. Donghae whines before Sungmin sits down next to him.
"There has been a robbery at the Lotte store on..."
Donghae murmurs something around his mouthful of banana, and Sungmin winces as he dodges a speck.
"What?"
"I said." Donghae clears his throat, swallowing the chunk of banana. "How do you feel about Hyukjae?"
Sungmin freezes, staring at Donghae before he lets out an awkward laugh. This has to be a joke.
"He's my best friend, though I know he doesn't think the same. What, are you suggesting I like him or something?"
Sungmin pulls his lips back in a grimace, and Donghae stares at him, mouth pursed.
"You're a terrible liar for an idol, hyung," Donghae says, taking one last bite of the banana. The lady onscreen's pointing to a map of Seoul, something about humidity and UV levels.
Donghae looks at it one last time before he stands to throw the peel away.
"Better remember an umbrella tomorrow if you're going out. We only have schedule from four onwards, manager said."
Sungmin stays still even as Donghae lets himself out, a small, "think carefully about what you just said, hyung," following him before the door clicks shut.
"Donghae said something," Hyukjae says when they're sitting, watching some drama Kyuhyun's obsessed with.
"Yoochun-sunbae," he had hissed protectively before switching the channel from soccer.
Sungmin's acutely aware of how Hyukjae's leg is pressed against his, and the small pocket of heat where the bottom of his heart should be.
"Yeah?" Sungmin asks back, just as quiet after Kyuhyun shoots them a dirty.
"He..." Hyukjae hesitates, before he grabs a catalogue off the coffee table and an old marker. "He said this."
Hyukjae scrawls on the advertisement, his handwriting messy and almost unreadable. Sungmin wonders how his fans can find it beautiful and cute, but he's endeared anyway.
he said something about you liking me. is that true?
Sungmin stills for the second time in less than twenty-four hours, holding his breath. He takes the marker from Hyukjae's fingers, uncaps it and writes.
well, do you like me? circle yes or no.
He pushes the paper back before standing abruptly. Kyuhyun shoots him a look before Sungmin walks briskly to the kitchen, changing his mind once he's in there and letting himself into Shindong's room.
Hyukjae follows his movements before he carefully circles a word. Kyuhyun looks at him, and then the sheet.
"It's best if you're honest," Kyuhyun says before turning back to the TV.
Hyukjae looks at the paper before crossing it out and circles the other. He stands and slots it underneath Shindong's door before calling a goodbye out to Kyuhyun.
"Going to go out for a bit, want any snacks?"
Kyuhyun shakes his head, waiting until Hyukjae's outside before turning off the TV and walking to Shindong's room.
"So?"
Sungmin holds up the sheet, the yes crossed out and the no surrounded by an uneven, shaky circle. Kyuhyun gathers Sungmin in his arms, letting Sungmin sob into his shoulder and his hands clutch at Kyuhyun's sleeve.
"I thought, I thought maybe..."
It's awkward, the position they're in, sitting on Shindong's bed like they are, but Kyuhyun rubs soothing circles on his best friend's back and hopes that one day, Sungmin will see him.
