We have freezing rain here today. It's going on for most of the night, too. I can hear the ticking of ice pellets off the windows in the back of my house, and the rear windows are all coated in a thick layer of ice. I've run in to so many people here who all exclaim over the fact that I am from Manitoba by saying, "Well, you must certainly enjoy our milder winters!" In a word, NO. I hate ice. Yes, we Manitobans get covered in snow and minus 40 temps, but at least I can stay upright! At least my car doesn't ignore any attempt I make to not slide through the intersections in Manitoba!
So many people assume I hated the winters in Manitoba. Truth is, I loved them. Yeah, it gets cold and everything, but if you aren't an idiot about dressing warmly when you go out, nothing beats sitting inside with a bunch of your friends and being warm while the outdoors is transformed into a whitescape. I saw Isabella Rosellini on The Daily Show yesterday, and she mentioned that the winter in Sweden, while dark all the time, has a special kind of light, a blue kind of light, that only happens because of all the snow. I know exactly what she means, and I miss that. Snow here just doesn't seem the same.
